I went there today but didn't stay long as it was super crowded and I had my 4 year old with me. It reminded me a lot of MOM's Market. They had a decent selection of gluten free food, with some items priced more (Vans frozen waffles were $1 more than I pay at Giant) and some items less (Udi's frozen bread was $1 less). They had a pretty large baking selection which surprised me. I plan to go back during the week when there are less people so I can really check out their whole store. I must say though, their staff were very friendly and helpful!

We had breakfast here. A sticker on the door said they are part of a Gluten Free Restaurant Awareness Coalition or something similar. Inspired confidence. The server knew what I was asking for. They make gluten free pancakes and french toast. The server said they only had "a little" dairy in them, but I was skeptical so I went with an omelet instead. As far as I
could tell they cooked this without butter. It came with gluten free toast that was really good.

Honestly, I felt "slightly" like I was taking a risk while I was there, but the server knew what I was asking for when I said gluten free and she confirmed with the kitchen that the Pad Thai was safe. My body tells me everything was copacetic.

Gluten free at deli in Ft. Myers, Florida

In the first weekend of September I traveled home to Ft. Myers, Florida. I wanted to give a review on Jason's deli. They were great! They had gluten free bread options for their sandwiches and also discussed the meat choices, which to avoid. When I selected my sandwich, they additionally took the time to ask my level of sensitivity and were completely willing to do everything possible to avoid cross contamination. They had a separate sides for gluten free people, changed gloves, changed knives/utensils, cutting board, etc. and they were willing to discuss everything they would do to avoid cross contamination as best as they could. My chips were bagged and not from the massive pile. So again to reduce cross contamination. My sandwich was wrapped when it got to me. Again to reduce any contamination. It was a really nice experience. I felt like a normal person going out and eating lunch with my mom. And I ate a sandwich at a deli. Which felt weird but a good weird! Very knowledgeable chefs, gluten free pasta on request (cooked in separate water, they actually know things!), the risotto is gluten free and ridiculous. Gringo's Taqueria is a tiny hole in the wall that seats about 15 people, in a crappy strip mall next to a bike Best fish tacos on the east coast! They don't have a freezer, everything is fresh (awesome, but also means they occasionally run out of things). Almost everything other than battered fish tacos and anything with flour tortillas is fine. Just make sure to ask for corn tortillas, many of the tacos default to flour. Fantastic margaritas, they make their own mix, but they aren't cheap. Submitted by a member of the DC Celiacs Support Group http://www.dcceliacs.com

My family and I love Pocahontas Pancake House. We try to eat there whenever we're in the area. They have the best gluten free pancakes with lot's of topping options. There is always a wait, it's a little crowded, and it's a little more expensive compared to an IHop or similar restaurant but it's worth it! :) My son loves the chocolate chip pancakes. They are on Atlantic Ave, and have their own parking lot. Submitted by a member of the DC Celiacs Support Group http://www.dcceliacs.com

I wanted to share my great experience last night. I went to dinner at Clyde's in Friendship Heights last night and they were wonderful. They have a strict allergen policy and the waiter told me I didn't even need to worry about special instructions when I started to ask about cooking on separate or cleaned surfaces. Their special this week is gluten-free and the bartender came over to tell me which of their drinks she could guarantee as gluten-free, which probably were but she couldn't guarantee 100%, and which I should avoid. The food was great, they clearly have their act together for taking care of people who have specific dietary restrictions, and the service was outstanding.

It's a new fast-food style restaurant in the Wegman's complex on the North end of Frederick. It has delicious organic grass-fed beef burgers, and hand cut shoestring style fries that are in a dedicated peanut oil fryer. Extra toppings are delicious, but everything except lettuce and tomato is an additional charge. Good quality ingredients if you are in a hurry and looking for that kind of food. I am told that their ice cream and shakes are out of this world, but have to go when I can share it with someone, because that much dairy will do me in :) FYI: don't even bother asking about both veggie burgers here -- they are loaded with soy sauce, wheat, and soy. Definitely not gluten free fare. If you are questioning any ingredients at all due to other allergies, the cashiers will immediately hand you an ingredients list card for all items in the restaurant. The print was large enough that I didn't have to hold up the line to get my readers out too, bonus! They get an A+ in my book for that style restaurant.

Everything gluten free at this restaurant in Washington, DC

Reviewer: DC_Celiacs from DC/MD/VA,

I just wanted to share a good experience at Ghana Cafe on 14th Street near Logan Circle. The restaurant is very casual, and it was not at all crowded on a Monday night (3 tables, including ours). The owners (a Ghanian couple) took our drink and food orders and answered our questions. NONE of the dishes have gluten (or dairy) in them. Ghanians do not use wheat or dairy at all in their cooking, and this restaurant is authentic. So there is really no concern with cross contamination which is always a huge comfort for me. They do serve beer which of course has gluten but the food is all safe according to the owners. I had the "Red red" - fried plantains and bean stew with a side of spinach and pumpkin seeds. It was delicious. My dining companions all had the Jollof with either goat or chicken and they all loved it. My husband who is hard to please said after 2 bites, "Why have we not been coming here more often? I could eat this goat all day!"

I've read complaints on yelp and elsewhere that the service is slow, and maybe it was, but it really just felt more relaxed. We were able to take our time, have a drink, enjoy our food, and linger for a little while after dinner. They did come to check on us a couple of times but otherwise left us alone to enjoy our meal. We will definitely be going back!

Highly recommend this restaurant in Bethesda, MD for gluten free dining

We went on Friday night before a concert up the road at Strathmore. Having never been there and having seen mention of gluten free options on their website, we opted for the tasting menu. Boy was that a good idea! I told our excellent waiter that I was Gluten Free but my husband was not and we proceeded to get 6 courses of really good food - only some of which were specifically modified to give me a Gluten Free option. I got cucumber slices to enjoy the cheese sampler to start - hubby got pita bread which he said was a very tasty. This was followed by calamari (his was fried, mine was in a garlicy sauce) - I would have sworn before I went that I did not like calamari but this was delicious.

The grilled Cesar salad, cod and chorizo stew, and beef brisket didn't seem to need any adjustments since we ate from the same plate. His dessert was cheesecake, mine was a perfectly nice creme brulee (which I honestly didn't need given all I had already eaten!)

At the end of the meal, Chef Tony came out of the kitchen to check on us and make sure I was happy with the Gluten Free options.

I don't know that I could eat 6 courses again but I certainly will go back.

Our family has eaten at Chima. We've never had a problem with gluten and I'm very sensitive. I've even eaten off of the large salad bar which I usually never ever do. But they run a tight ship there and attend to the food. The rolls were always gluten free but not dairy free. I believe they are either the Chebe brand or something like it. No nutritional value but tastes good. But then again going to an all you can eat steak house is not something to do everyday. I always let the staff know however so they can take care to inform me what is safe as we go. They will bring lots of little dishes to the table so ask about those. Not a good gluten free experience at Cheesecake Factory in C

I know that this location has gotten a bit of a reputation for not being the most consistent, but I took my chances for a family member's birthday lunch as it was the desired location of said birthday boy. Warning: they have a dirty kitchen. I was very clear in the need for Gluten Free meal, stated it was a health concern, etc. A special waitress came over and took my order, and she was very confident in that my request of "plain broccoli and baked salmon" was something that the kitchen could "absolutely" prepare. This gave me confidence. I was 4 bites into said broccoli when I discovered pieces of wheat pasta on the plate, hidden in the pile of broccoli -- not full pieces, but 4-5 two inch pieces of pasta that had clearly fallen off of dirty utensils in the kitchen. The manager apologized and then told me how careful they are; that broccoli is steamed away from the pasta. I told him that the precaution makes no difference if you use pasta crusted tongs to plate the dish. Even without the health concern (and I am sensitive, so the tummy is still not right), I found it disgusting that pieces of old food for another person's meal landed in mine. BEWARE. I had the Pasta Pomodoro with artichokes and olives. It was delicious. I think next time I'll try the pizza. It smelled yummy! They are also willing to make a dairy free pizza as well. They would just omit cheesse and put whatever toppings you'd like.

Just spent two awesome days in Gettysburg. Had dinner (Thursday night) and lunch (Friday) at the Dobbin House, an 18th century home converted into a restaurant (dinner) and tavern (lunch). Both offered gluten-free alternatives. The waiter at dinner was very knowledgeable of cross-contamination issues (to the extent that when he brought the bread for my husband he put it on the large windowsill we were sitting against so that "any crumbs from the plate would not reach my plate." I ordered their smoked salmon (without the crackers) as an appetizer and was assured by the waiter that the crackers were in a bin in a separate section of the kitchen so there would not be any problems of cross- contamination. The chicken with mushrooms and tomatoes was superb! The waitress at lunch was also very careful with my lunch. She brought me a list of what I could order. I had a green salad with turkey, sliced apples, walnuts, tomatoes with honey mustard dressing and a side of potato salad. It was delicious! So I thought that I would share will everyone that I just tried a brand new eat-out place that just opened in DC called District Taco (located at 13th and F st.). I got to talk with the owner of the place since it is a new restaurant he was there to answer all my questions. So I should first start out by saying that I am highly allergic to Gluten and if I even touch gluten I will break out or if I eat it I will get short of breath right away. So of course I was very leery as to if I should try there corn tortilla (SOFT) not because I would be allergic to the corn tortilla (Yeah that is right SOFT not hard) but because of the cross contamination so I grilled the owner as to there process and then watched. They actually have designated a second section on the burner for gluten free tortilla's only which was nice and if they are dealing with gluten free issue person they will change gloves so no cross contamination there. It was also nice that it seem like they have so far trained all there employees very well in the gluten free way because everyone I spoke to was very knowledgeable and on one page. So as far as the taste test the taco was superb the most authentic Mexican taco I have ever tasted. Almost all there salsa's they offered were gluten free, too, which was nice. As for allergic reaction which if there was even a speck of Gluten on it or in it I would have know ASAP. THERE WAS NONE only a full satisfied belly. NOTE: The owner said that if you always tell them that you are Gluten Free they put that on the receipt and that lets the staff know to prepare your meal separately. He said that if you just order the corn tortilla and not say you are GF they will not put it on there and will not cook the tortilla on a separate burner and cross contamination can happen that way, so make sure to always tell the cashier that you are gluten free. Gluten-free friendly dude ranch in Arizona

Reviewer: DC_Celiacs from DC/MD/VA,

I just got back from an amazing week at the White Stallion Ranch in Tuscon, AZ. It's an all-inclusive dude ranch (room, meals, several rides a day, nighttime entertainment, access to all facilities) which I was excited to visit but a little cautious about being away from home for so long and being "stuck" at a place (I didn't rent a car, they picked me up, also included - you can always rent a car at the airport, or actually at the ranch even) w/o access to a grocery store or a "safe" chain restaurant. But when I called to book my stay and asked about how they handle food allergies (yes, I know Celiac isn't an allergy, it's just easier to explain it that way) they knew what Gluten Free was right away and said they handle it all the time with no problem . And indeed they do. MOST of the food is naturally gluten free just because it's fresh and homemade. For obvious things like bread (including banana bread for breakfast), pasta, and dessert, they had substitutions that they buy from a local health food store. Carrie who works there in the morning and afternoon and I went through the menu each day to figure out what was okay as is (which again, most was) and what needed substitutes and then it was handled w/o me even having to follow-up. I'd walk into the dining room and they'd just say,"Katie, we have the gluten-free bread right here" or at lunch, gluten-free cookies would magically appear on my table. So, the gluten-free bread wasn't always the best (I'm spoiled by Whole Paycheck) but more than edible, and like most GF breads tasted just fine when toasted (which they did separate from the other bread. I had a french dip on a toasted english muffin). It is buffet style which I was fine with because of the way it was set up (there was space between each food item and wasn't set up in a way that people were swapping serving utensils) but they were more than willing to make me a plate in the back 1st. And when the naturally GF option wasn't something I liked (salmon) they made me my own dish anyway. There were also breakfast rides, and lunch cookouts, and wine and cheese tastings, where again, I got there and there was separate plates marked "Gluten Free" without me even having to ask (I did the first couple of excursions, but honestly, I started to forget to ask because it was all just handled w/o me needing to say anything). I had to laugh when I asked for gluten-free cake at dinner and they were out and "only had GF cookies and caramel swirl ice cream." How often does that happen that you even get a choice? The Ranch itself was also amazing. Everyone was incredibly friendly to everyone and all the staff seemed to know all the guests names by the end of the 1st day. The place is a dude ranch in the dessert so you'd expect to find horse droppings and dirt everywhere, but it was immaculately clean. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The horses were great and the wranglers just awesome - I learned so much about riding and got to keep the same horse all week. There were also fun things to do each night and the facilities were beautiful. It's not a kid centric place like Disney World but definitely kid friendly (I think that anyone over age 5 could ride and the wranglers were awesome with the kids that were there). So if you want to have a great time without having to worry at all about the food (they are pretty accommodating so if you have other food issues I'd just ask, and no one goes hungry), I definitely recommend the White Stallion Ranch. I had an outstanding experience at Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights last night. The service was excellent and the waiter new up front all of the menu options that were gluten free. Meridian Pint is known for their beer - so my expectations weren't high for the overall experience - they had 10 or so cider options, and again the server knew up front which ones were OK. It was obvious that he had been trained in how to cater to food allergies, and I ate without any of that, "What if I get sick afterward because they messed it up?" anxiety, which equals an A++ in my handbook. I had quinoa stuffed squash with swiss chard and roasted walnuts - to die for. SUBMITTED BY A MEMBER OF THE DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

The menu has a lot of variety and the restaurant is very good about avoiding cross-contamination. The Gluten Free menu has a great selection of desserts and I was thrilled to find a flourless chocolate cake on the menu (my favorite). The food is pricey since everything is a la carte but a great place to go for a special occasion. SUBMITTED BY A MEMBER OF THE DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

They have a gluten-free menu that really includes wonderful choices, not just "order ---- without the bun" kind of items. I actually had trouble making a decision; there were so many appealing choices that were not only gluten-free but also vegetarian!! As if the excellent food weren't enough, the wait staff is very professional and courteous. They have crayons for kids to draw on the table (paper-covered) and riddle cards provided to keep older kids busy until the food arrives. Beware of trying to eat gluten-free at the National Zoo in Washington, DC

We visited the National Zoo yesterday. Doing our homework before going, as we always do, we learned from the zoo website that the zoo has Gluten-Free options so didn't pack lunch as we so often do. When it was lunch time, we stopped at the Panda Plaza eatery and asked about Gluten-Free options. When we approached the counter, we asked the woman about GF options. She had no idea what we were talking about. Knowing that the website said the fries were GF, we asked if the fries were fried in the same oil as the chicken tenders, she replied yes. So we asked for the manager. When we asked her about the fries, she said that she had learned from another customer that the shared oil made the fries not gluten free but had not done anything about it, further commenting that she should have someone take that info off the website. Disgusted by the lack of any Gluten-Free training or concern, we did not feel that we could be safe eating anything here. Just wanted to let everyone know the GREAT experience I had at the American Girl store restaurant in Tyson's Corner. When you make the reservation online, you can let them know you have a food allergy. Upon arriving at the restaurant, I told them again I was Gluten Free and they said a chef would come to our table. The chef arrived almost instantly with the official book stating what on their menu was gluten-free. There were quite a few choices, including Gluten Free pizza! Food was delicious and it was a treat to be able do something special like this with my daughter. I want to say that while I have a confirmed Celiac diagnosis, I don't get sick if I accidentally ingest gluten, so I can't say if they did everything right. I am only taking it for face value that it was actually all gluten-free with no cross contamination. I can say, the experience about them having a gluten free menu, the chef coming out personally, the variety of food on their menu and the food being delicious. I visited Cheeseburgers in Paradise in California, MD. They have a gluten-free menu reviewed by the Gluten Intolerance Group. I ordered a BBQ Cheddar burger and assumed (because I didn't read the italicized print) that it would arrive bun-less. It arrived on a beautiful bun that did not look gf. At first I felt confused and thought I hadn't made clear that I was gluten free, but the manager (who delivered our food) assured me that both the bun and the BBQ sauce are gluten free. And they tasted really delicious to me. In general all of their food is made to order, so contamination is minimized. All of it tasted fresh and was mostly in season. The manager checked on us twice and at the end of the meal gave me a $25 gift certificate to try a location closer to me! Obviously this is not standard practice but overall both he and our waiter provided extremely thoughtful and attentive service. I don't know about the other locations but I highly recommend this one. I had two choices of dessert and my table decided to share the truffles, which were amazing. After the meal, the owner/executive chef checked on our table and asked how if I enjoyed my meal. I called ahead on Thursday and spoke with a manager who happily walked through the menu with me to explain what was gluten free. There's no separate menu, but when I told the waitress on Saturday night that I needed gluten free, she understood immediately and knew exactly what was safe and what wasn't. Anything on the grill and most of the salads can be made gluten free. I had the peppercorn steak salad with oil and vinegar on the side. It was very good, fresh greens topped with a piece of quality steak. I did not get sick, and I'm sensitive, so I would have known by now if there was any cross contamination. They have wine and hard cider available; I encouraged both the manager and our waitress to consider carrying some kind of Gluten Free beer. We sat outside and not only the hostess but also our server were both GF, and everyone on the patio seemed to be GF as well as we kept hearing people talking about gluten. My son loved the GF pizza - and it's much larger than the pizzas at Pete's or the usual small Still Riding size. A good bargain on half price night! They have lots of GF choices but I was very disappointed in my steak salad - the lettuce was brown and wilted and pretty disgusting. I didn't send it back because my kids were getting cranky and wanted to get home but next time I would. Henry's already asking when we can go back there. I was able to indicate our needs when I made my reservations on line. Each time I asked about the food/ingredients, our waiter assured us that our needs would be met. My son’s favorite line from our entire trip was our waiter’s reassurance that, “If Sir cannot have gluten or dairy, then Sir will not have gluten or dairy.” He brought us separate trays of sandwiches. Both were made with one of the best GF breads I’ve had but, while mine had butter, my son’s had a soy spread. I got a GF scone with clotted cream; he got a GF and dairy free scone with soy spread. I got a delicious maccaron with raspberries; he got mini fruit kebabs. The level of service was superb. This was not cheap but, since I love going to tea, was well worth it! He also went through other items on the menu that could be prepared gluten free for me and asked several questions about what types of cheeses and condiments I could and couldn't eat and checked with the chef when I asked about the possibility of breadcrumbs in their hamburger meat. Lombards in Universal Studios: Chef Bryan came to our table and explained how he had just been to training on gluten free and had recently acquired a dedicated fryer -- he made french fries just for us. He asked us what we wanted (even off menu) and made it special. Mythos in Universal Studios Island of Adventure: Outstanding restaurant and staff also walked us through all the options. The wait staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating. Finally, a chef at Loews Royal Paradise, one of the 3 onsite hotels, was incredible. He came to our table and also asked my kid what he wanted to eat and that he would be his personal chef during our entire stay. He also gave us a tour of his kitchen, showing us his gluten free pantry and prep area. There was zero eye-rolling at any of these places. They were eager to please. I googled Universal before going and the reviews didn't look so good. So I'd like to give a thumbs up to these 3 places in particular. I had lunch at Meet 27 in Baltimore with my mother for Mother's Day and it was fantastic! First of all, the place is absolutely charming. They had some art students paint a Baltimore-themed mural on one wall with a bunch of famous Baltimoreans all eating lunch together. It's a riot. And there are some beautiful paintings on the wall next to it too. The food (which is all gluten free) was remarkable. The chef appears to be Indian and the meals they were offering yesterday all seemed Indian- themed. My mom had a mildly spicy trout wrapped in banana leaves and I had chicken strips in a hot, red chili sauce over mashed vegetables. The appetizers were a fantastic chicken satay and vegetable fritters with a sauce that was one of the best things I've tasted. They don't have a liquor license yet (they've only been open 5 days), but I made due with a delicious mango and yogurt smoothie and my mom had something with lychee nuts floating in it that she liked very much. My mom was only diagnosed a short time ago and she said that this was the best gluten free meals she'd ever had. It was not as crowded there as it should be! We just returned from Grace Bay, on the island of Providenciales ("Provo") in Turks and Caicos. We highly recommend staying near the grocery store called Graceway Gourmet. It is very much like Whole Foods, and carries many of the GF brands you know, including Udi's, Schar, Kinnickinick, DeBolle's, Mi-Del, Bell and Evans, Lucy's, Kind Bars, Crunchmaster, etc. We also had good accommodating meals from our hotel (Seven Stars, which is on the beach/right across the street from Graceway Gourmet), Hemingway's, Lemon Cafe, Grace Bay Cottages (I think that's the name), and Somewhere Cafe (though we didn't love this restaurant, but it was fine). Had a great dinner out at Open Kitchen in Falls Church, VA, on Friday. Almost every entre on the regular Spring menu was gluten free. Both Chef's Specials of the day were gluten free. Two of the three salad options were gluten free. The Crme Brulee and Chocolate Mousse desserts were GF; both were fabulous. Big points for their treatment of fish and for their excellent wine offerings. It was great to have so many GF options for a change! Gluten free pastries at restaurant in Washington, DC

I have been craving pastries for the past couple of months, but have not found a place that had nice pastry-ish type foods. Even Whole Foods was coming up short. But, on my way home from a long walk to see the Cherry Blossoms, I stopped by Ris Restaurant on the corner of L and 23rd Street NW, DC for a coffee and happened to mention to the waitress that I was gluten free. She explained that the pastry chef and sous chef are personally very familiar with the gluten free diet, and they just came up with Rhubarb Rasberry Almond Crumb cake - which I promptly ordered. Wow!! My craving for pastries has been satisfied!! The Crumb cake can be a dessert (with marscapone ice cream on top and a light custard around the sides) or as a pastry for brunch (without the ice cream and custard). It is filling enough for a brunch item, but you might want to split it with someone as a dessert as it is quite rich. Ris also serves gluten free beer and a couple of other gluten free items- but I was most interested in the crumb cake. If visiting the Kennedy Center, Foggy Bottom or Georgetown, stop by and check it out. SUBMITTED BY A MEMBER OF THE DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

I just wanted to recognize Restaurant Eve in Old Town Alexandria for doing a fantastic job handling dietary concerns. I have business lunches there occasionally and they save names along with special requests in a database making it very easy to take clients there. Case in point, I made a reservation earlier in the week for a lunch today. They had gluten free bread ready for me and the waiter (who was very knowledgeable) indicated most of the items could be made gluten free (I ordered the Basque Seafood Stew and it was excellent). My guests sampled the bread and even commented it tasted just like "regular" bread. As a bonus, I ended up taking home almost half a loaf for sandwiches the next few days. :) Hats off to Chef Cathal Armstrong and Restaurant Eve! My son recently ate here and we discovered that Benihana in Bethesda now caries gluten free soy sauce. They were able to cook everything using the gluten free soy sauce - making virtually the entire menu gluten-free. (note: not the onion soup - which includes battered fried onions) The manager seemed knowledgeable about how to separate the cooking utensils and flat top area to ensure gluten free food is cooked on its own. But my son's group just asked to have the whole party use the gluten free soy sauce - making it even easier. I don't know if other Benihana restaurants are doing this - but the manager in Bethesda says they have been carrying gluten free soy sauce for a few months now. Birch and Barley: a great restaurant for gluten-free diners

I had an amazing experience at Birch and Barley in the U Street Corridor this weekend. I went to check out ChurchKey because of that City Paper article on gluten free beer (which I sorely miss) and found Birch and Barley, the restaurant below the bar. The waiter was the most friendly and knowledgeable I've had since I've started my gluten free diet - and I eat out on the town at least once a week. They had five beers for me to choose from and a wonderful menu with several flatbreads, which of course I skimmed over until the waiter told me that they could make any of the flatbreads with a chickpea- based flour. The food was amazing - I highly recommend the flatbread with figs and prosciutto. It was the first time I'd visited a restaurant and didn't feel like I had to sacrifice what I wanted for a lesser choice because of my dietary restrictions. I hadn't realized how much that was really getting to me! What a relief. SUBMITTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

I had a wonderful lunch experience at Freshii, located at the corner of M and 20th Streets in NW Washington DC. I found them by accident, and I'm so glad I did. They're a new little lunch place focused on quick take-out. They specifically cater to gluten-free and other allergies, although you can't tell by their online menu, but look closely and you'll see the GF commitment. Their in-store operation is set up to avoid cross-contamination, and all the staff was knowledgeable. They were pleased to take the time to explain to me how their line works and what was safe for me to eat. So the safety factor was great, and the salad I had was great too. Because they let you build your own, there are so many choices; I was able to get vegetarian today but some of the meat toppings are safe too. They also carry GF brownies, which were very good also. I have not had a reaction, and I'm very sensitive. If you're near Dupont Circle and need a good lunch, give them a try. SUBMITTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

Brasserie Back treats gluten-free diners very well

Reviewer: DC_Celiacs from DC/MD/VA,
Reviewed on Aug 16, 2010

I just wanted to put in a good word for Brasserie Beck, the Belgian restaurant at 11th and K in the District. I had to attend a group event there last month and sent an email via the website asking about gluten free options. I get a response from Julie Albert with whom I traded emails over several days to see if the organizers had selected things that were suitable. She insisted that there would be options on the special menu that would be either GF or could be made GF. (Aside: her attitude is "And any restaurant not willing to accommodate you shouldn't be in the business. I do not say that in a nasty way, it's just that it's not that difficult." Gotta love that!) The dinner went well and the server knew what options were open to me and I was even offered a sorbet for desert even though it wasn't part of the event menu. (It was originally delivered with a cookie on it but that was quickly rectified once I pointed it out.) My spouse has always wanted to try Brasserie Beck and so he treated me to lunch there yesterday. I got to try ordering from the regular menu instead of just the special menu for the group dinner. I imposed on Julie again sending her an email to ask about the fries as I really had a hankering for mussels and frites. She originally responded that they were gluten free and then shortly afterward send an exclamation filled email that she had double checked with the executive chef and was told that they were not GF. She gave me his name and told me to feel free to speak directly to him. She followed this up with a phone call to make sure I got the information before going to the restaurant, including leaving me her cell phone number in case I had any questions. I got the clarification in plenty of time and had no trouble talking with the waitstaff about what I could and couldn't have. I had the mussels with curry and apple with a side of stompe instead of frites and the whole meal was wonderful. In fact, when one waiter brought me a second glass of wine (really enjoyed my lunch!) he mentioned that they even had GF beer. It's New Grist, not the logical Belgian Greenes which apparently has distribution issues, but I appreciated the information just the same. So I commend to you Brasserie Beck as a wonderful place to eat. It's certainly not an everyday kind of place but I can't say enough about how well I was treated and want to spread the word. Woody's Beachside BBQ's smoked chicken is GF, their fries are cooked in separate fryer, and applesauce and coleslaw are both GF, too. (Their baked beans are NOT - the kielbasa that they use is not GF, good thing we asked!! And they were very friendly and open to answering all these questions.) Last night we ate at the Cultured Pearl and I called ahead to be sure that everything would work out. The manager spoke to me on the phone and I learned that any teriyaki dish is safe. They make their own teriyaki sauce and it is GF. As has been previously reported, they offer GF soy sauce if you are having sushi. He did mention that there are a few things, like eel, which already are marinated in soy and should be avoided. Anything that they make from scratch can be made safely. He made a point of telling me that they have many customers with Celiac and are pleased to able to accommodate them. My son ordered chicken teriyaki and had veggie sushi with the GF soy sauce. Also the edamame bar is great and we were assured that nothing unfriendly is in the edamame. The dinner was terrific. SUBMITTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

This is some of the best Italian food I've ever had, GF or not. They will make any of the pasta dishes with GF pasta. The risotto changes day to day, but when I was there it was GF and one of the best things I've tasted in my life. There are several great GF deserts too. Don't go to VA beach without going here. It is a nice Italian place, so you'll spend some money, but it is well worth it. It is on the side of a strip mall type place, but don't let the outside fool you. I ate lunch recently at Joe Theismann's restaurant across from King Street Metro Station. They do not have a GF menu, but I phoned ahead and spoke with Sarah, who was very helpful in making suggestions for items that were already GF or could be adapted. She told me to ask for her when I visited the restaurant so she could bring me additional recommendations for entrees directly from the chef, which she did. I have other food intolerances too and they could accommodate all of my needs. They make all of their sauces and dressings at the restaurant so they know what's in them and can remove them or substitute as needed. SUBMITTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

He didnt get sick, but I felt like I had to do a lot of explaining to make sure the server understood what he needed. At Bethesda all the servers weve had know all about the gluten free pancakes. He loves that they have a giant sign on the window advertising the GF pancakes. This is our most tried and true restaurant. Would not hesitate to recommend it! We went to the new Pete's Apizza in Tenleytown/Friendship Heights yesterday eve. They have the same menu as the Columbia Heights location, with the Kyra's GF pizza, which has a tasty crust. You can add almost any toppings you like. Unfortunately we went at the busiest time - about 6:30 pm. By 7 pm whole pizzas were taking 40 minutes, and GF pizzas 50 minutes! I remember that happening in Columbia Heights, too -- if you order a special pizza, the food for different members of your party will come out at wildly different times. Best to go before 6 pm, around 8 pm or later, or order take out. Also, although we think the GF pizza's delicious, they can only promise to "do the best they can" to avoid x- contamination. They are informed about the issues but the prep area is very busy. So, you must decide what risk you can tolerate before going... It's also possible just to have one of their lovely salads, antipasti or gelato -- there's little or no wait for those items, and they are not prepared in the pizza area. Chef Tony's in Bethesda is a gluten-free dream

Have you spent countless hours fantasizing about delicious gluten-free food? Do you wish you could walk into a restaurant and eat anything on the menu? If you just answered yes to both of those questions, then you’re in luck! Chef Tony Marciante of Chef Tony's restaurant (formerly called Visions Restaurant) in Bethesda has expanded his vision of high-quality and elegant food to include a vibrant gluten-free menu. I was first introduced to Chef Tony's/Visions Restaurant as part of our Washington DC Gluten-Free Dinner Club. Every month a big group of us gather at a different restaurant in the DC area to eat delicious food, share stories and meet new people. We’ve been to some pretty amazing restaurants, but our meal at Chef Tony's topped the list! Our meal started with a trio of appetizers including an olive tapenade with sliced cucumbers, roasted red pepper hummus with rice crackers and a blackened Ahi tuna with a cucumber seaweed salad. The second course was a light and fresh salad of mixed greens and arugula, cranberry goat cheese and a tangy dressing made from extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and sea salt. For dinner, we were able to choose from a variety of entrees including: blue crab pasta with a marsala curry sauce, filet mignon with sticky rice and cucumber salad, roasted chicken with asparagus and artichokes over brown rice or, my personal favorite, grilled salmon served over pasta with artichokes and a pesto cream sauce. Dessert included a phenomenal chocolate crme brule topped with fresh berries or a refreshing lemon sorbet. The meal was incredible and it was a wonderful feeling to know how much Chef Tony cares about people with food allergies. SUBMITTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

They do mix in flavors of the day (they mix after the custard comes out of the machine, individually) but they publish a calendar of the flavor of the day online and you can go on a day when the flavor will be GF! Today was salted caramel, and it was delicious. To our delight they also have GF ice cream cones. They said they "usually" have them, so might be worth a call if you are making a long trip. The GF crust is home made so not made in a 'GF Facility' for those who are worried about that, I though did not experience any sensitivity after eating there. They have locations in Alexandria and Arlington, enjoy! They also have gelato but steer clear of the hazel nut flavor as it has cookie in it and they were sure to tell me that. I had a good experience at Uncle Julio's last weekend. I asked the waiter if the beef in nachos had any flour or wheat in it, and he immediately asked if I had a gluten intolerance. Then he explained that both chicken and beef had gluten in them, but that they could prepare the steak without the marinade on request. He also suggested the black beans instead of the refried beans, and though this made me sad at first, he assured me they were also very good. My meal came the same time as my boyfriend's, and it was delicious! So you can go there and they apparently know how to -- and will -- prepare you a gluten-free meal! Which is pretty awesome. I was at the game last night and was pleasantly surprised to find that Boog's sells gluten free rolls for their turkey, beef and pork BBQ. While the roll is not fantastic, it's pretty good and it doesn't fall apart mid-bite; their BBQ is excellent. The person serving me had celiac disease and assured me the sauce, baked beans and coleslaw were all GF. She said the staff knows to change gloves before serving the buns and is very attentive to cross contamination concerns. Boogs is located under the green tent behind the center field bleachers on Eutaw Street. The woman also mentioned that GF crab cakes and Asian noodle salad are available behind homeplate. Had a couple folks relay their experiences at the Chart House so thought I'd report back on my experience. Although they don't have a GF menu, they did have good intentions and the waiter was patient with my asking on ingredients. I was with a large group, and group appetizers were ordered - I asked on the crab filled mushrooms if there was any wheat, soy sauce, etc used - and he assured me there wasn't and that he would make a note to the chef to be sure the mushrooms had no wheat so I could share those. When they arrived, I noted a kind of cream sauce under them, which concerned me - but I asked on that and he said they don't use wheat flour in it. The mushrooms were good and only filled with crab meat, not a stuffing of any kind. I got cajun blackened fish with the rice and veggies - and was assured there was no wheat or wheat starch in the spices or any item. Although, when the waiter asked if I can have butter (because it is on the veggies), I then lost some confidence that they know what gluten is - but thought he might be asking since dairy is also an allergen to many and he was trying to be attentive. In the end - I had no reaction, which I would have had by now (although hard to tell since I have a sinus infection and my system is wiggie from the antibiotics - but I would have noted additional distress). So - although they aren't specifically GF, I'd rate the experience as going well and would say they did make effort and were pleasant about it all. I'm still new at ordering in restaurants so probably don't have the routine down as some others do, so I always hope for the best ... SUBMITTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

Lots of gluten free options at Mediterranean restaurant in Frederick, Maryland

AYSE Meze Lounge is located where Tauraso's used to be. They offer Mediterranean/Greek Tapas fare and are owned by the same people as Isabella's, and one other Frederick restaurant that has a good reputation too that I can't recall the name of at the moment. They do not have a separate gluten free menu. You are just handed the same menu as everyone else, and there are designations on the items that are gluten free naturally or can be adapted to be gfree, and it is a nice selection of stuff. The food is delicious, and portions very ample for a tapas restaurant in particular. I was in a party of 20 people at one long table, and the server remembered everything I asked of her for my gluten free stuff. I am one of those people that if there had been any accidental mix up with the food, I would have known about it before I even got home. I have been there twice already, and the food is excellent and the service impeccable. I highly recommend it as a special treat. BTW, don't miss the brussel sprouts, they are just divine : )

I took my daughter to Noodles restaurant for her birthday dinner. They have one dish that is said to be gluten free, the pad thai, which my daughter really enjoys. Many months ago, my daughter got sick on two separate occasions after eating there, so we didn't go back for a long time. Finally, though, we decided to take a chance. We spoke to the manager who oversaw the making of her meal, and she was fine. We thought, ok, we will just specify each and every time how important it is for her meal to remain gluten free, and maybe she can eat there. So, we took her there for her birthday. I did the usual song and dance. The manager came to speak with me. She said that she could NOT guarantee that my daughter's meal would be gluten free. I mentioned what had been done for the previous meal, but the manager said that since she had not been present when the restaurant opened and had not overseen the making of the noodles (all noodles are made first thing in the morning), she could not guarantee that the rice noodles had not been placed in wheat noodle water. This might explain why my daughter got sick on two separate occasions there. I just wanted to warn everyone that even though employees are supposed to make the rice noodles first at Noodles restaurant, it might not be happening. This was at the Kentlands Noodles restaurant. We ended up leaving Noodles and going elsewhere. What a disappointment! My daughter was so upset, she cried. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

Roti restaurant in Washington, DC for gluten-free

I had a great chicken roti on a gf pita at the new Roti in Washington DC yesterday. www.rotiusa.com I was skeptical because of concerns I've heard about cross contamination, but the restaurant has apparently taken steps to address cross-contamination issues. I printed the gf menu and presented it when I got to the counter. The people behind the counter recognized it and asked me to wait, as someone specific had to cook for me. A young man came out, introduced himself, and explained that he would personally prepare my order in the back, away from any risk of contamination, and then bring me my pita. He was very helpful in taking my order, and clearly understood how to keep my food safe. I only waited a few minutes till he brought it out, and the roti was amazing - the pita wanted to fall apart a bit, but I handled it gently and it stayed together. Only one drop of aioli was spilled! The pita was surprisingly soft, a good texture, but not the most flavorful I've ever had. The fillings more than made up for it. I was quite well afterwards, and am considering going back tomorrow. If you're in DC near the White House and need a gf lunch, Roti can be a great choice. It's expensive and crowded, but not too noisy, and the ordering line moves fast. Best of all, they recognize and respect the need for safe gluten free food. SUBMITTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

I decided on the gf pasta, the waitress (who really didn't want to deal with me) went and checked and came back and said they didn't have gf pasta anymore as well as something else I wanted. We went back and forth with a few other things and in the end I was really scared to eat my food- especially after my salad came out with croutons. I ended up with the mixed grill, but I don't think I'm going back there again. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

After hearing about their gluten free menu I decided to try Olive Garden in Fairfax last weekend. I obtained the g-f menu and chose a caeser salad to start with. I asked waiter if g-f dressing was available and he didn't know. I asked manager and he said no. So I ordered the salad and waiter kept repeating to himself No Croutons, No Croutons. Salad was OK though - I had oil and vinegar for dressing. Then I ordered only gf pasta meal on menu as I didn't want chicken or steak. Manager told me it comes frozen and they zap it in M/W. When I ordered this from my waiter he put his finger on my menu selection and said he was taking it to kitchen to show them. Needless to say, this did not inspire confidence! All in all meal was just OK. I did not feel comfortable & really gave manager the third degree. Long story short, I will not eat there again. We had a great week at the Club Med in Florida, and they were very accommodating with gluten free. Prior to our arrival, I called the reception to ask about GF. My answer from them was awful – no knowledge of GF, no way to do it, etc. However, I figured that I could work it out when we got there. We’re very glad we went! Once we arrived, I met with the head chef. He was extremely knowledgeable and despite being very busy with spring breakers, gave me all the time I needed. He sought out my son and introduced himself, and made sure that my son knew he could ask questions anytime. He offered to cook my son’s French fries in separate oil. He tore the side off the French fry and the soft serve ice cream box to show me the ingredients (both GF). He brought flourless chocolate cake to our table. He made suggestions as to good dishes to try, etc, etc. One of the nights we sat with the purchasing agent, and he told me that they have more and more GF requests and that they are making a concerted effort to get more educated. (They *do not* have a dedicated work area or grill however). While they cannot guarantee no cross contamination, Club Med made every effort to make our meals an enjoyable part of the trip. Tucker's Bistro has its own gluten-free menu. Highlights include the native striped sea bass ceviche (one of the specials of the day), Long Island duck, and the most heavenly sorbet I have ever had the pleasure of tasting (and as dairy-free as I am, I try every kind that crosses my path!). The service was just right, attentive and friendly but not intrusive. All the staff seemed relaxed and easy-going, like they were enjoying the evening as much as any of the guests. There was a general atmosphere of goodwill as people gathered together to savor good food. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

Great lobster and excellent, thoughtful service at 22 Bowen's in Newport, Rhode Island. They provided an Italian olive oil for me in place of butter. I mixed this with the coconut oil that I had with me in a handy mini-jar and then dipped the lobster in this delicious oil concoction. It was so good. The rest of the meal was perfectly gluten-free casein-free and yummy -- a tasty salad, some sauteed mushrooms and a baked sweet potato that tasted like candy. The owners also run the Architect's Inn just a few blocks away and twice we joined the breakfast party there and enjoyed meeting fellow vacationers. It was such a blessing to be able to get up and enjoy a yummy breakfast before heading out on our day's adventures. We had peach pancakes, french toast, breakfast risotto, and "festive eggs" (whole eggs cooked to perfection in delicate bacon cups -- the edges of the bacon made the egg look like a flower in bloom), as well as several different kinds of homemade muffins. The staff was very, very nice when we spoke on the phone prior to our trip. There is plenty of free parking. The restaurant looked a bit dated, for what that's worth. To be fair, we went the night after we had such a fantastic experience at Steakhouse 26 in Delaware, so Seasons seemed to pale in comparison, even though they did a good job with our meals. They made our son a nice GF crab cake platter, and we were able to get a glimpse of the nightly ice show at the hotel as we waited for our meal. Got a "Best of Delaware" rating and said they accommodate all special food needs. I just stopped in for an appetizer with one other person from our group, and neither of us needs GF food, so were weren't able to test it out. The guacamole was very good. Service was awful, but that may have been due to the time of day (mid- afternoon) and the individual server. I didn't use the restroom there, but the other person did, and said it was not good. They make everything to order and had gluten-free La Choy soy sauce, but either bring your own soy sauce or call ahead to be sure they have some in the restaurant -- they just happened to have it at the time we were there. Melting Pot is a fondue restaurant with entre fondues, cheese fondue for an appetizer, and chocolate dessert fondue. It is popular with large groups because you are sharing a common pot on the table. Issues are likely to be cross contamination within a pot of sauce, the items in the sauce, and the bread itself. However, our support group has received good reports from members who’ve gone to both the Gaithersburg and Columbia locations (there are many more in the DC/MD/VA area, as well as across the U.S.). One member reports that the management at the Gaithersburg restaurant was very accommodating. They were well aware of Celiac issues and provided her daughter with her own cheese and chocolate fondue (to avoid cross contamination from others dipping bread and other gluten-containing items in them. There are rumors they are working on offering gluten- free bread, but in the meantime, you can take your own and enjoy the cheese fondue just like everyone else. Dukem is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in DC. Off the top of my head, almost all of their food is gf except for the pastry filled dishes and FitFit which includes the injera (bread) with the food. They used to have an all teff injera, but have now switched to a mixed version- I've been told it's because teff is too expensive so they have to buy the mixed versions. Attached to Dukem they have a grocery store that sells injera. I have found one brand that says it is all teff, so if you want to buy a whole package you can always do that and take it in with you. You can always freeze it for later. I have made my own and taken it along as well. One last piece of advice- all the dishes are served on top of injera, so you're going to have to ask for yours without it and you have to really emphasize that. Only problem with that is if you're eating with other people everyone shares a platter so they have to be okay with no injera underneath their food (it's tastier when it soaks up the juices). I recommend their biggest combination platter (don't remember the number) as well as the goden tibs but everything is fantastic! Etete is also a great option around the corner for great tibs and vegetarian combo platters, but same deal with a mixed injera. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

Last night I ate at Nage and was, once again, blown away by their celiac awareness. The waiter could tell me everything on the menu that was GF and there was a lot. He apologized that they could not make their signature Macaroni and Cheese GF that night because "the only gf pasta we have is rice noodles and it doesn't taste that great with those noodles." I thought - they have GF noodles in stock? They have more than one KIND of gf noodles in stock? I had the braised short rib which was so good I almost ordered three more portions; and the hamburger (no bun), was voted one of the Top 50 hamburgers in the US by Food Magazine; and shoe string fries. (yes, I DO need to go to the gym!!) POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com

My son received a box of gluten free whoopie pies from his godmother for Christmas. According to my son, they are the best dessert he has ever eaten. So if you have a whoopie pie craving or need an alternative to cupcakes for a birthday party at school or home, these arrived individually wrapped in a box. I am not sure how many flavors the bakery offers, but his box came with two: smart blonde and cinnamon toast which was his favorite.

Last night I ate at Masala Art, the new Tenleytown Indian restaurant that's been getting rave reviews. EVERY entree is GF. repeat!! Every. Entree. Many of the appetizers were as well. Their pappadums are GF as well. The food was incredibly good. Reservation highly recommended, though. NOTE: One word of caution -- while the missi roti is made from garbanzo flour, it is baked on the same clay oven surface as the other breads (no pans or anything to separate them). Gluten Free Vietnamese restaurant in Falls Church, VA

On Sunday I went to Three Sisters Vietnamese restaurant in Fairfax/Falls Church off of Gallows Road. My boyfriend was about to start explaining gluten free to the waiter when he said, "We have a menu...be right back" and he came back with a gluten free menu. Seems like it is just identifying what is gluten free off the regular menu but there are a ton of options (and makes the large overwhelming menu much more manageable). The food was delicious and they even have crispy spring rolls! Definitely makes ordering Vietnamese much more stress free!
