G-F Tex-Mex with locations in DC/MD/VA

Austin Grill is a good Tex-Mex restaurant with a plethora of g-f options that both adults and kids will enjoy. In addition to the location in Penn Quarter in DC, they have five locations in Maryland and three in Virginia. They're open for lunch and dinner and even brunch until 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. We went to the Centreville location, which, along with the Annapolis location, is testing a new menu (no g-f version is posted online -- they just give you a paper g-f at the restaurant -- but the entire new menu is posted on their site at http://www.austingrill.com/austingrillee/pdf_files/Austin_Grill_ Centrev
ille_Dinner_Menu.pdf ). Therefore, the choices were a bit different from the other locations at this point. You can view their regular GLUTEN-FREE menu for all their other locations online at http://www.austingrill.com/austingrillee/pdf_files/AG_Gluten_F ree_Lunch
_Dinner_Menu.pdf The choices are abundant on the g-f menu...traditional Mexican fare like enchiladas (made with corn tortillas, of course!), as well as ribs, salads, fajitas, and fish. Our son, the one on the g- f diet, ordered a chicken and cheese quesadilla, which was really good. It's nice that the tortilla chips are g-f, too, so you don't have to bring your own. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup (very good) and the fish tacos, which were probably the best I've ever had...a good amount of delicious red snapper, perfectly seasoned...not too terribly spicy. I forgot to ask if they could be done g-f or not...maybe if you substituted corn tortillas, but you'd have to check. My husband had the ribs, which he said were good, and our other son enjoyed his steak soft taco. Their brunch menu even includes a range of 5 entrees, sure to satisfy just about any taste. Again, it's nice to see an area restaurant group making an effort to cater to the Celiac community. I'd highly recommend giving it a try if you enjoy Tex-Mex food. Always confirm the g-f choices yourself, either before you go or when you arrive.

Austin Grill is a good Tex-Mex restaurant with a plethora of gluten free options that both adults and kids will enjoy. They have two locations in Virginia (Springfield and Alexandria), one in Maryland (Silver Spring), and one in Washington, DC (Penn Quarter). They're open for lunch and dinner and even brunch until 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The gluten free menu is posted on their site at http://www.austingrill.com/content/glutenfree.html ). The choices are abundant on the g-f menu...traditional Mexican fare like enchiladas (made with corn tortillas, of course!), as well as nachos, steak, salads, and fish. Our son, the one on the gluten free diet, ordered the cheese enchiladas, which were really good. It's nice that the tortilla chips are g-f, too, so you don't have to bring your own. Gluten Free Pizza and Italian Fare

Reviewer: Gftraveler from South Riding, VA, USA

This is a good, reliable New York Italian restaurant, with an extensive menu of pastas, heroes, calzones, chicken and veal specialties, salads, seafood, and pizza. Although they do NOT serve gluten-free pasta and obviously cannot tailor some things like calzones to be gluten-free, they DO serve wonderful gluten-free PIZZA, which is made in a separate kitchen, apart from their main pizza ovens, so there's no need to worry about cross-contamination. They are also able to make almost all of the chicken and veal dishes gluten-free, but you need to be very specific when explaining that you're on a gluten-free diet and what that means, because not all of the wait staff is well- versed in the intricacies of gluten-free food preparation. With a bit of work on your part, this can be a very enjoyable dining experience, but also try and go at off-peak times, as the restaurant can get busy, and the staff is not shy about wanting to turn the tables. It can leave you feeling a bit rushed, especially when trying to be vigilant in explaining your gluten- free needs.

Great Gluten Free Groceries

Reviewer: Gftraveler from South Riding, VA, USA

This is a wonderful place to find almost any of your favorite gluten-free brands of food...Glutino, Pamela's, Kinnikinnick, Cherrybrook Kitchen, Orgran, Gluten Free Pantry, Envirokidz, By George, etc, etc. They even carry the Schar line of products, Europe's #1 gluten-free brand, which until recently were hard to find in stores and had to be ordered online. The employees are very friendly and helpful and will special order items they don't carry. The store is small enough that it is easy to navigate and find what you're looking for (and more!) yet big enough to carry a wonderful array of gluten-free foods, as well as the organic, natural, healthy items you'd find in a store like Whole Foods Market. It is honestly one of the few stores I've been to where you can find virtually EVERY good gluten-free item you're looking for (frankly, they have an even BETTER selection than Whole Foods). If you're lucky enough to live in this area -- Rockland County, NY -- you will not have to run around to so many different grocery stores finding what you're looking for...this is one-stop shopping. (Our family just happened to be visiting family in the area, and boy are we jealous of having a place like this!)
