Gluten free dining at a wonderful restaurant

We had a wonderful dinner here. It is an upscale restaurant specializing in steaks and seafood. It's perfect for large groups or private parties. They have many alcoves with tables that seat 8-10 people, as well as private party rooms. We were there for a regular dinner in their elegant dining room. Their bar area is very impressive, too. Although they do not have a gluten free menu posted on their website, they have one they will give you, upon request, at the restaurant. There were plenty of appetizer and salad options, each sounding so tempting that it was hard to choose: steamed mussels, lump crab tower with avocado and mango, and wonderful salads. I chose the Walnut Mixed Greens with candied walnuts and blue cheese crumbles. The other salads included a chopped version with bacon and blue cheese and an iceberg wedge. There's also an oyster bar. Entrees consisted of many different cuts of steaks, along with Atlantic salmon (which I ordered) stuffed with crab, shrimp, and brie and served with delicious mashed potatoes and a green bean/carrot medley. There were also seared sea scallops and King Crab Legs, which another gluten free diner at our table ordered. If you're in the mood for a more simple preparation of fish, there are five varieties to choose from, each which can be sautéed, grilled, or broiled. There are several gluten free sides to choose from (a la carte), although most meals come with sides. We ran out of time for dessert, since we were on our way to a show, but they do have creme brûlée, and I was going to ask if their signature "Chocolate Bag" dessert was gluten free (it's a dark chocolate "bag" filled with white chocolate mousse and berries). I'd highly recommend this restaurant -- for anyone, including those that need to follow a gluten free diet. It's pricey, but worth it for a special occasion.

Gluten free at Japanese steakhouse

Like most Japanese steakhouses, this is relatively easy to manage if you're gluten free. We brought our own gluten free soy sauce, but they also stock it there. So don't worry if you don't think to bring your own. You can order much of what is on the menu for the teppanyaki style cooking. You have your choice of meats (steak, chicken, seafood), and they know which dipping sauces are gluten free. Some are, and some aren't. But before you get to your "main" meal, you start off with miso soup and salad, which are included. Miso soup is not always gluten free, so we skipped that. The salad was served sans salad dressing, which was good. Next, your table side chef will prepare fried rice and also some shrimp. Afterwards, they prepare the sautéed vegetables and meat. Ideally, you'll want to request to be at your own table, since you'll be using gluten free soy sauce. In our case, however, it was a Saturday night, and we were seated at a large square table with other parties (this is typical at Japanese steakhouses). The chef prepared our rice first with gluten free soy sauce (before preparing the other diners' fried rice)...and also our meats before other diners. But it's important to ask them to thoroughly clean the grill between courses, as the "regular" fried rice was prepared on the grill right before our steak and chicken. So we needed to have them get the residue of regular soy sauce off the grill. It made me a bit uncomfortable as they did not change the utensils...they merely wiped them with a rag in between. If we go again, which we probably will, I'd go at a less crowded time (or less busy day) and request our own table so we don't have to worry about cross contamination. We didn't have a reaction, and everything was delicious. It's also a fun experience, watching the "show" of them preparing your food. It's just a little dicey having them go back and forth between our GF food and others' regular food on the same grill.

Gluten free at Italian family style restaurant in Tysons

It had been a while since we'd dined at Magliano's. It's a wonderful Italian restaurant in the Tysons Galleria (and locations nationwide) that offers the option of dining family style. It's fun to go with a large group and try a lot of different things. There were a few of us who were gluten free in our group when we dined there recently. You can ask to talk with a manager or chef about your gluten free options, but the servers are usually informed of what is available gluten free, too. There are a lot of choices...many things are or can be made gluten free. They have gluten free pasta, so that presents a range of options with all the different sauces. Salads are easy to work around. There are only a few appetizers are gluten free. For one of our main pasta courses, we ordered the gluten free Shrimp Fra Diavolo, which was served atop gluten free spaghetti and was absolutely delicious (and not too overly spicy). Another gluten free diner at our table had never been to Magliano's since she began following a gluten free diet and was amazed they had gluten free pasta (and that it was so good). There are many other pastas that can be prepared gluten free, so just ask. We got the gluten free Chicken Marsala as another one of our main courses. For dessert, gluten free options are pretty much creme brûlée or fruit.

Gluten free options at seafood restaurant chain in Fairfax, Virginia

We hadn't been to a Red Lobster in YEARS but decided to give it a try since we'd been given a gift card -- and we heard they had gluten free options. We were pleasantly surprised -- this is not the Red Lobster we remember from years ago. Although they don't have a Gluten Free Menu, per se, they have a printout of their menu items in a chart form listing the presence of major allergens, including gluten. Just about any fish or shellfish (lobster, scallops, shrimp, crab legs) can be prepared gluten free. It will typically be broiled with a basic preparation, but it was all good and fresh. Great lobster tails, shrimp, and scallops! No one ordered the snow crab legs -- but next time! There are also plenty of sides that are gluten free, and all entrees come with a really nice salad. Their blueberry balsamic vinaigrette dressing is gluten free and delicious. Too bad they don't offer a gluten free version of their cheddar biscuits! With Red Lobsters all over the country, it's a good place to keep in mind when you want something other than fast food and where there are a good number of gluten free seafood options.

Gluten free dining at restaurant in Flint Hill, Virginia

This is a very nice restaurant and inn in picturesque Rappahannock County, Virginia. We dined here after visiting Philip Carter winery, about 20 minutes from here. We'd verified when making our reservation that the restaurant could accommodate gluten free diners. They responded that they could. After getting seated, we spoke to the chef, who said most anything on the menu could be made gluten free. I ordered a half rack of Baby Back Ribs, which was plenty, because they were really meaty and hearty. They were delicious. Typically they come with fries and coleslaw, but the chef said the fries were already prepared for the evening and were not gluten free, although he said if you call in advance they can make a gluten free batch if desired. So instead I had some wonderful mashed potatoes with chives, sour cream, and cheese -- along with fresh green beans. I ended the meal with homemade orange ice cream. They offer a varied menu here -- something for all tastes: pasta, chicken, steaks, burgers, salads, and more. The inside decor is not what you'd imagine at this 100-year old historic building that used to be a schoolhouse. It is newly renovated and modern inside, with a neutral color palette and a lot of glass. Very pretty -- just not what we expected. There was a private party in one of the large dining rooms, and the restaurant had set things up beautifully with one large table. They apparently do a lot of receptions, private dinners, and events here. The restaurant is also open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers outdoor seating. There are four luxury suites upstairs, which have also been recently renovated. This is a nice spot to base oneself if looking to explore the Shenendoah Valley, Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the wealth of outdoor activities and beauty the area offers.
