Good gluten free pizza at restaurant in Chantilly

This is a new Mellow Mushroom restaurant, located in the Wegmans shopping center in Chantilly. We've been meaning to try it for a while, since we have been to the one in Herndon...and another in North Carolina when traveling. First off, when you walk in the door to this restaurant, you are greeted by the heavenly smell of pizza. It's a nice ambiance, too, with a cool bar area. They offer gluten free pizza here, and there are notations on the main menu about what is gluten free (no separate GF menu). Their gluten free crust is their own, but clearly made off premises and sent in -- or made in advance. (It has a uniform shape, as opposed to being "hand tossed." It is good, though. I get the impression it's healthy...seems to be whole grain or ancient grain, not the typical rice flour base. It has a good texture and taste. I should have asked what it was made from. They only come in the 10" size, which is fine for one person, but frankly, I was still a bit hungry after eating it. I should have ordered a salad, too! You can either order one of their specialty pizzas listed on the menu and marked with a "GF" notation or you can create your own. In the restaurant, our menu showed which toppings were gluten free (marked with a GF), if you were building your own custom pizza. However, they don't seem to notate which toppings are gluten free on the menu on their website ( https://mellowmushroom.com/menu/ ). Perhaps it varies by location. They take significant precautions preparing the gluten free pizzas, as explained by our server when I asked him. They make them in a totally separate area of the kitchen. They also note on their menu that "Any pie can be made on a gluten free crust; however, only those pies and ingredients with the GF designation can be made with our allergy-safe procedures. Additional gluten-free items may vary by location; ask your server for details." This probably explains why, at this location, we found GF designation next to many of the toppings. Our son ordered a pepperoni pizza, which looked so good I almost swiped a piece from him! Many of the salads appear to be gluten free, but not marked. It is worth asking about next time, because they have many delicious sounding choices that don't seem to include gluten containing ingredients like croutons. The only downside is that the pizza is on the expensive side. When you add the $2 uncharge for a gluten free crust -- and then pay for each topping if building your own -- it adds up. For example, my custom gluten free pizza with 4 toppings was $19.50 (and, like I said, that's for a 10" size). But if you like trying different types of gluten free pizza, I'd recommend this place, as it's a step up from the norm. You get a more interesting and healthy crust -- with plenty of traditional AND gourmet toppings to choose from. Their Kosmic Karma specialty pizza sounds amazing...I intend to order that next time!

Extensive gluten free menu at restaurant in One Loudoun

Unfortunately, you won't find Matchbox's gluten free menu posted on their website, but WOW, what a gluten free menu they offer! Even though they are a "Vintage Pizza Bistro," they offer so many different non-pizza options on their 2-page gluten free menu. We all just had to try the gluten free pizza, and we were glad we did, as it was delicious. The crust is homemade (there, I think) and is thin and slightly chewy the way I like it (not cracker-crisp). There are so many different combinations you can order -- or create your own combo. I got the Chicken Pesto, and my son got the Pepperoni (loaded with small pepperonis). Their non-pizza options on the Gluten Free Menu include soups, appetizers, hot spinach and artichoke dip served with corn chips, many delicious entree salads, short ribs, salmon, steak, baby back ribs, and grilled chicken with smashed potatoes and asparagus. They also take proper precautions in the kitchen and mark the order if you have a gluten "allergy"/Celiac, as opposed to just a dietary preference. I can see us going back here a lot. There are a fair number of locations throughout the DC/MD/VA area, as well as one in Florida and one in Texas. Hopefully they will be expanding and opening even more restaurants, because this place is a winner. Nice ambiance, too.

Amazing gluten free cafe and bakery in Falls Church, VA

Reviewer: Chrisj from Northern Virginia, VA

This place is open for breakfast, lunch, and early dinners (check their website for hours, as they differ based on the day of the week). They are entirely gluten free, and they also notate any vegan and dairy free items on the menu. They offer omelettes, sweet and savory crepes, French toast, pancakes, other breakfast platters, soups, quiche, salads, pot pie, lasagna, and amazing baked treats: cakes, cupcakes, macarons, petit fours, cookies, scones, tiramisu, and more. Everything we got was delicious. Our family started with brunch. Three of us ordered crepes -- two Nutella crepe orders and one savory crepe with ham, eggs, gruyere cheese, caramelized onion, mushrooms, and Swiss b├ęchamel (that order even came with a small salad and wonderful rosemary potatoes, shown below). One family member ordered the pancakes with scrambled eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns. You would never know this place is entirely gluten free, and they don't broadcast that fact, so some people probably come in there not knowing it's all gluten free. After enjoying our brunch, we bought a bunch of baked goods to take home with us. Their bakery items like their cupcakes are divine. We especially enjoyed the lemon coconut (one of the best cupcakes I've ever had) and the salted caramel. They are moist and not overly sweet. We don't live really close to this cafe, but we are certainly going to try and stop here every time we pass through the area. I highly recommend this place for anyone who is gluten free -- or not!

Always a reliable and tasty choice for gluten free diners

We recently dined at the Winchester location of Glory Days Grill, which is one of the most gluten free friendly restaurant chains in the Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia region. They have tons of options on their Gluten Free Menu. I wholeheartedly recommend the ribs, which can be ordered with various gluten free barbecue sauce choices. The fries are gluten free, too. Other family members like their burgers (on GF buns), wings (also with a choice of GF sauces), salads, and salmon. It is nice to go to a sports-themed bar/restaurant that's family-friendly AND has so many gluten free choices. They are very careful in the kitchen, too...they train their employees well. We have eaten at various Glory Days Grill locations over the years and never had a problem. They even have gluten free dessert...an amazing flourless chocolate torte. AND they have GF beers and hard cider. Highly recommend.

Good gluten free pizza near South Riding, VA

They offer 10" gluten free pizzas here. The crust is made by Senza Glutine. It was quite good. The other nice thing is that they prepare the gluten free pizzas in a separate area from the regular coal-fired pizzas, so there is little risk of cross contamination. They use separate toppings, bake the pizza in a pan, and use a clean pizza cutter. The only reason they have a disclaimer on their menu about possible cross contamination is because it's not a dedicated gluten free facility and there is flour "in the air."
