Self-Serve Yogurt that's gluten free in Cape May, NJ

My family loves going to self-serve yogurt businesses so we were pumped to find one in Cape May during a family vacation in July. We were more than eager to investigate the many flavors and see how many toppings they had to complement the yogurt.

As a traditional self-serve yogurt restaurant, they offered the normal serve-yourself pull-down levers and a counter for multiple toppings. This location was a bit smaller than what we were used to, but it was clean, and the employees were more than friendly offering a ton of advice from what yogurt to try based on our tastes, gluten free challenges and healthy options.

What we didn't know walking in were the health benefits of the product. They boast that Bonnie's yogurt has 50% less calories and sugar but a certain percentage more fiber and protein. What we found is that what it did or did not have did not affect the taste. It was great.

In this particular location there were 8 options for "froyo," of which 50% were gluten free. There were labels above the froyo that identified the nutritional benefits, and clear as day the words "gluten free." Very nice not to have to disect the ingredients.

The topping counter was a bit disappointing if you are used to the normal 40 or so, but not to diminish the weight of good frozen yogurt, the homemade whipped cream was to die for.

I was a bit weary of the product, but the staff were so knowledgeable about gluten free and the products were so fresh you couldn't help but feel comfortable.

Great comfortable atmosphere with CHAT PACKS on the table to assist with the family discussion-starters. The only other downside aside from the minimal gluten free topping offerings was the price. It's a bit pricey, probably about 10-15% more than what you are used to paying in the suburbs but definitely worth it. Our family went back three times to enjoy the yogurt, the atmosphere and the shopping center around the place.

I tried the french vanilla, raspberry pom, chocolate (which was labeled "awesome" by six people immediately) and peanut butter.

I enjoyed the crushed peanut butter cups, whipped cream and peanuts. Other gluten free family members had the coconut toppings and almonds.

Overall this place had great customer service, an excellent product, clean and fun environment (think coffee house but with yogurt) and enough options to please everyone in the family three times during a week-long vacation.

Rated only 4 palms because they ran out of whipped cream on the last night we visited.

Pizza Wow -- gluten free in Cape May, NJ!

Think traditional casual pizzeria with [flip flops ok] dining area. The appearance of this beach-front pizzaria made me a little nervous because, as you would expect, a ton of pizzas in the showcase, huge menu overhead and a ton of people assisting customers behind the counter do not equal immediate gluten free friendly. Do not let appearances fool you.

They have a tiny sign in the boardwalk window that says, "Gluten Free Pizza" so I thought I would give it a try.

Immediately upon entering I was welcomed by someone behind the counter, and when I asked about the sign in the window they said of course and asked me what toppings I wanted. I chose to go super safe with cheese and pepperoni (after I inquired about the pepperoni manufacturer). He said it would take about 15 minutes, and I was a bit rattled from an unfortunate gluten attack the night before so I needled the employee but he didn't seem to mind.

After 15 minutes, not only would he NOT put my pizza on the counter for me to take, he had to put it on a part of the counter that doesn't hold any other type of pizza and it was covered. When I received the pie, it had its OWN gluten free pizza cutter. Literally, it came with a sharp plastic cutter in a plastic wrap and the cutter said, "Gluten Free".

The pizza was the best I have ever had, and I traditionally make my own pizza. The crust was neither thin nor thick but sturdy. The size of the pizza was larger than the traditional store bought (about 18-20") and packed with fillings.

I would highly recommend this location for take out or eat in and the ONLY negative to this pizza was that I left the leftovers in my condo fridge. Such a downer as I would have eaten the leftovers on the way home.

Cost for the pizza was around $20 but I would have paid more for the end result.

Great service, super knowledgeable staff, clean environment and super safe gluten free kitchen.

Italian Heaven in Hershey

Extremely Celiac-friendly, casual Italian dining experience in Hershey, PA. Located approximately 2.5 miles from the main Hershey attractions, Piazza Sorrento offered a casual and safe dining experience for adults and children. The children's menu offered the traditional fare but the waiters were more than happy to swap out options, gluten free and the like, to make it exactly what we wanted. From an adult's perspective, beer, garlic bread and too many options to list provided an amazing dining experience. The waiters, front of house staff and kitchen staff were extremely versed in cross-contamination and except for one instance where the waiter didn't know if a sauce was gluten free (he went out of his way to confirm and find out more about the preparation of the sauce) everything was perfect. I approached the menu similar to every other restaurant asking about the details of preparation and the waiter jumped in and said, "you're Celiac?" and from then on, it was a smoothe ride. A bit of advice - if you go, though a very easy transition for the wait staff and hostess desk, it's better to call ahead and alert them to the gluten free needs. The meal was so good the first night, our family went back for another round the following evening! I highly recommend the pizzas (the spicy chicken pizza was amazing) and the pasta dishes. The gluten free bread was store bought but altered at the restaurant. Overall a 4.5-palm restaurant due to: -proximity to Hershey attractions -ease and peace of mind menu -knowledgeable and friendly wait staff -price ($15-$20/per person including alcoholic beverages) -menu variety including desserts - so popular they ran out the second night (took .5 palm away for that reason only!) (Lastly, there are two parts to the restaurant. There is a casual, pizza shop portion and the more formal sit down restaurant. Though both are casual, the pizza shop has a serve yourself feel but we didn't eat there so I can neither comment on whether or not they serve GF pizza nor provide a safe atmosphere but if the pizza shop is anywhere near the safe haven of the restaurant, it should be fine but please call in advance of visiting.)

Individual Gluten Free Service at YMCA Camp in Dingmans Ferry, PA

We took 200 girls to this camp and I was the only Celiac. I told the camp I was Gluten free about a week in advance and to be honest, I was skeptical about their ability to prepare gluten free meals based on their accommodations on the website and other photos I've seen. When I got to camp, I checked in with the chef and he was extremely friendly, smiled all the time, never appeared like I was putting him out and he continued to tell me all the products he purchased to make my stay gluten free. He prepared an egg breakfast for me and continued to tell me the ingredients in all the meats. He prepared a separate gluten free pizza for me and kept it warm in a sep. oven than the other campers' chicken fingers. Chef Carl continued with a gluten free pasta meal that he prepared on a sep. oven and used sep. utensils. Not losing a beat, he made sure my last breakfast and meal was GF pancakes that were delicious. Great job and thank you for making my nerves go away at what could have been a horrible experience if it wasn't for his attention to GF detail. Chef Carl knew how to answer my questions and his camp meals were delicious.

Fabulous gluten free Italian food in Quebec!

This restaurant wasn't even recommended by our concierge but after walking through the city we came upon it and asked the hostess if they had a gf menu and within seconds she had someone come outside and talk to us who was more than excited about creating special meals for us. We had dinner and once we spoke to our waiter and mentioned Gluten Free they did more than accommodate us. They recommended meals and even recreated certain menu items for us. Even if they didn't, we would probably stay due to the ambience. It was a very small but fun and loud restaurant with an accordion-singing Frenchmen, named Luigi. We couldn't eat any pasta and they didn't have a "GLuten Free" menu- but they substituted a protein with other carbs and veggies. Their menu is pretty extensive-- featuring many traditional Italian items. We noticed a lot of families with young kids but our GF needs were for adults but I have no doubt they would be able to accommodate a child's needs. Our waiter was concerned about cross-contamination and promised us our meals would be prepared in a safe environment even though they did not have dedicated kitchen. A huge find in a tough non-GF-friendly city. Given 4.5 palms ONLY because they didn't have a dedicated menu.
