Our family went to Joe's Crab Shack for dinner beacause we found out that they have a gluten free menu. We couldn't decide what to get so we asked our waiter what kind of crab to order: snow crab, king crab, or dungeness crab. He said the Crab Daddy Feast had all of the three crabs so we could try all of them. We ordered that and a bucket of 18 shrimp. The first crab we tried was the snow crab. It was very sweet and it ended up being our favorite crab. the next crab that we tried was the dungeness crab. It had a very mild taste. The last one was the king crab. I didn't really like it beacause it was very salty. Then our waiter came over and we ordered some more snow crab. They also have other "steampots" of seafood, salads, fish, and even steaks on their Gluten Free Menu. Gluten-free sides include french fries, veggies, corn on the cob, potatoes, rice, and applesauce. You can print out a Gluten Free Menu -- and even a gluten free kids menu on their website. It was a really good experience.

Gluten free menu at restaurant in Fairfax, Virginia

Our family went to Bonefish Grill in Fairfax, VA. They have a gluten free menu and all the food was DELICIOUS!!!!! For the starters we had the mussels josephine and the saucy shrimp. They were both really good! If you don't like sauce on your shrimp, I wouldn't recommend it. We ate every last bite! We also had 2 grilled fishes. They were the chilean sea bass and the sea scallops and shrimp. There were 5 scallops and 4 shrimp. We had the grilled specialties as well. We had the lily's chicken, the filet mignon, and the angler's steak. I LOVED the angler's steak! The lily's chicken was also delicious. The sides were the garlic whipped potatoes, the herbed jasmine rice, the french green beans, and the steamed broccoli. For dessert we had the macadamia nut brownie, and the creme brulee. Most of the specials were gluten free that night: the saucy shrimp and scallops, the lily's atlantic salmon, the spinach bacon gorgonzola atlantic swordfish, and the chocolate creme brulee. We had a great experience.

Mamma Lucia in Olney

Our family went to Mamma Lucia after hearing that they have gluten-free pasta and pizza! We called ahead to make sure this particular location (Olney -- there are 7 others in MD and one in Reston, VA) had both the gluten-free pizza and gluten-free pasta available. It's a good thing we did, because on that day they happened to be out of gluten-free pizza. That was fine...we figured we'd just order gluten-free pasta. We were planning to talk with the manager when we arrived to find out if any of their sauces were gluten-free (you can never assume, after all!). However, when we arrived, the manager was on a delivery, so we just ordered the pasta with a little olive oil and parmesan cheese. We made sure the pasta was cooked in a separate pot and that a separate colander was used. It was good (I think it was Schar pasta -- the best). However, it would have been nice to have some sauce (others in our party who are not gluten-free raved about the tomato/cream "vodka" sauce). The manager did return as we were finishing up our meal, but he seemed a little uncertain about whether the sauces were gluten-free, or at least a bit confused about what that meant in terms of sauces. If you go and have the time to have a conversation about sauces, you'd also want to make sure there are no issues of cross contamination with the sauce/ladles coming into contact with gluten pasta. I think next time we'll try the pizza. We are thrilled that Mamma Lucia is offering gluten-free pasta (and a good kind) and gluten-free pizza. This has always been a favoirte with others in our family who are able to eat gluten. It would just be helpful if they took the time to determine whether their sauces are gluten-free. There are plenty of other things on their menu, like chicken, veal, and seafood dishes that could probably be prepared to be gluten-free as well, but at this point it would take some work/a detailed conversation with the manager and chef to be sure cross contamination was avoided.
