Great Gluten-free Lebanese in Chicago

Who would have guessed that you could eat gluten-free at a Lebanese restaurant right in my neighborhood? I have been newly diagnosed as gluten sensitive, but the chef at Fattoush is herself a celiac sufferer. In the last month the restaurant has rolled out a complete gluten-free menu to complement the traditional Lebanese fare they have offered for the last 8 years. The latest addition was a fabulous spinach pie with a short-crust pastry that rivaled even the best wheat-based crust. The gluten-free pita bread that is served comes from Rose's Wheat Free Bakery in Evanston and could compete with any regular pita. Fattoush has been my favorite restaurant since I first ordered take-out from a flyer I found on my fence 8 years ago! Chef owner Lina prepares almost everything from scratch in a small but immaculate kitchen, carefully organized to minimize any possibility of gluten contamination. She herself suffers an anaphylactic reaction to even tiny amounts of gluten flour in the air. Check out Lina's story on their webpage - www.fattoushrestaurant.com. The whole staff is well informed about the dangers of gluten, and you can be sure that your meal will be safe as well as delicious! What I really enjoy is that nearly the entire menu is available in gluten-free as well as regular versions so I can eat there with my gluten tolerant friends and family. Another thing I enjoy is that I can choose to sit at tables upstairs in their bright and cheery dining room or downstairs on the floor among their luxurious Arabic style pillows. I can heartily recommend Fattoush to anyone suffering from issues related to gluten---or anyone else for that matter!
