Starving on Carnival Ecstasy: Not good for gluten-free diners Jan 06, 2012
reviewer: Gsdickson from Richmond, VA

The dining staff on board the Carnival Ecstasy was NOT helpful at all. My family of 6 (2 with Celiac Disease) took a 5 night cruise for Christmas. I had called Carnival to make sure they could accommodate their needs and they assured me they could. What a joke! The assistant maitre’d was rude and told me we were not the only passengers on board with a special dietary need. They came around after dinner with the next day’s dinner menu for them to order from. One night they ordered the same meal. One came with gravy and one came without! Their meals came out all at once (salad, appetizer, dinner meal together) as the rest of us waited for our appetizers. They assured me there were gluten free hamburger and hotdog buns and bread at the deli and at the Lido Deck buffet area. No one had any idea what I was asking for. They said they had gluten free pancakes and waffles in the dining room for breakfast. True, only if you pre ordered them! What?? No one told us we had to order anything ahead of time except dinner. No one should eat eggs 5 days in a row! Thank goodness we were able to find a grocery store in Nassau and bought a box of Fruity Pebbles. The head maitre’d told me the chef should have been able to make us waffles without pre ordering them and apologized for this staffs lack of care. He sent gluten free rolls to our table for dinner that night, but then that was the last we heard from him. In retrospect, he told me what he thought I needed to hear to get me off his back, because I never saw him again. Overall, we were very disappointed in meals, staff knowledge and overall willingness to accommodate our needs. WE WILL NEVER CRUISE WITH CARNIVAL AGAIN!
