Gluten free Taco Time at restaurant in Sydney May 05, 2016
reviewer: Gaild from Bend, OR, USA

After four and a half weeks of traveling that included four weeks on a cruise ship, we were ready for Mexican food. Though we'd eaten very well and high-end on the ship, we missed our food basics -- tacos. I mean we really missed them. A quick Google search yielded the name of a restaurant with good reviews within walking distance of our hotel. After we checked in, backed up our IPads and phones, off we went to find out what Mejico offered.

As soon as we walked in, I figured we'd like the place. It was contemporary and open without being cold, and we saw someone behind the bar shaking up some margaritas. We immediately ordered margaritas, which were made with fresh lime juice, and an order of fresh guacamole. The guacamole was flavored with crunchy pistachio nuts and served with plantain chips. We liked it so much, we ordered another round.

While Mejico offers plenty of gluten-free options from Yucatan-style grilled fish, lamb, and chicken to vegetable paella, we ordered our favorite elevated street food -- tacos. Since I'm a veganish-pescatarian, I ordered the salmon tacos without dairy. While the tacos are not listed as gluten-free on the menu, the kitchen modified the prep and served them on corn tortillas. They were delicious and especially yummy after I dabbed them with some of the flavorful guacamole.
With the tacos, we had the black rice, capsicum, coriander, and habanero salad. The gluten-free, vegetarian three-bean dip looked tempting too.

The next day, our last in Sydney, we feasted on gluten-free pizza at Criniti's and were too full for dinner but we managed to stroll over to Mejico for margaritas and guacamole before tackling one last packing for our morning flight back to the states.

Wonderful Gluten Free Pizza with a View in Sydney, Australia May 04, 2016
reviewer: Gaild from Bend, OR, USA

As we sailed toward Sydney, Australia after 30 days on a cruise ship, we only had a few food "wants" for our 1 1/2 day stay in Sydney. One was Mexican food and the other decent, gluten-free pizza.

On our first visit to Sydney, a year and a half before, while walking the city, we happened upon Criniti's, an Italian restaurant with indoor and lovely, plentiful outdoor patio seating near the water in Woolloomooloo on Cowper Wharf Road. Granted, the area may be a little touristy, but then again, we were tourists.

On our recent March 2016 visit to Sydney, we set off one day on a walking tour of Sydney with Criniti's as a destination. We arrived on the early side for lunch, but since our internal clocks had been fast forwarding through various time zones, we were ready for pizza no matter what the actual time. Luckily, the pizza ovens were firing and ready to go.

Criniti's offers pizza in various sizes, including one that could feed a small tribe. We ordered a gluten-free ($4 up charge) tomato, mushroom, extra basil, cheese less (I'm a veganish-pescatarian celiac) pizza. It was as good as we remembered -- thin crust, crisp, full of vegetables, delicious. This is the best gluten-free pizza crust I've ever tried -- and I've tried lots! We paired the pizza with a salad brimming with vegetables and topped with grilled pawns and enjoyed glasses of excellent Australian red wine.

In addition to gluten free pizza, the restaurant offers gluten-free spaghetti and penne pasta and bread, none of which I tried.

I found the waitstaff helpful and knowledgeable about celiac. Can't go wrong with good food and good staff.

**Note: Criniti's has a total of 6 locations in New South Wales and 2 in Victoria.

Excellent Gluten Free Meal at restaurant in Hong Kong May 03, 2016
reviewer: Gaild from Bend, Oregon

My husband and I had long debated visiting Asia. I was especially interested in seeing bustling, crowded Hong Kong, a city I'd long admired in photos and movies. Like many with Celiac, a part of our debate centered on how I would find safe, healthy food in Asia. After much discussion, we settled on a cruise of Southeast Asia with a starting point in Hong Kong.

I had one simple food goal in Hong Kong -- to at least sample traditional Hong Kong-style Cantonese food while my husband tried traditional dim sum. Happily, our goals were met at the fabulous Shang Palace.

After our extraordinarily long flight from the west coast, we checked into the Shangri-La Hotel in Kowloon, Hong Kong and were told by staff that the hotel offered excellent dim sum in its restaurant. The next day, a Saturday, found us at the beautiful Shang Palace surrounded by locals who were sipping tea and sharing dim sum.

While my husband easily selected delicious and value-priced items from the dim sum menu, Keith Chan, the manager, helped me order gluten free, pescatarian and vegetarian options, double checking with the chef to insure each item was safely prepared.

First, I was happily spoiled with pan fried scallops filled with minced shrimp and crab coral. While that dish was heavenly, the best was yet to come. The sautéed vegetables served in a perfect little pumpkin were as visually satisfying as they were delicious. But the best selection was sweet potato shredded into a lovely mound of delectable vegetable noodles and sautéed with a spicy Sichuan chili and vinegar sauce. I allowed my husband a small sample and ate the rest myself.

At the Shang Palace I indulged in a delicious, safe Cantonese meal all presented by outstanding servers. What a wonderful way to kick-off our travel adventure.
