Extreme Pizza - SF Bay Area chain Apr 07, 2010
reviewer: Amy from east of San Francisco

Extreme Pizza has several locations just east of San Francisco, but they were always just far enough away that we had never tried them. So... when Extreme Pizza set up shop with a new location near where we live, we just had to try it because one of their specialties is Gluten Free Pizza. I was a bit skeptical, so I called and talked with Julie who seemed to understand cross-contamination issues (they make all sorts of other pizza and sandwich foods that are not GF). Julie told me all about their separate preparation area, separate topping containers, and even separate trays to put the pizza on into the oven. I felt comfortable enough to give it a try for my son who cannot have gluten and place the order. This time we decided to do a pickup of the pizza so we could get a face to face with them. Julie was so sweet to my son and really very concerned that they prepare him a safe pizza. Well, they did it right! My son would have been very sick with even a little cross contamination - but no problem at all! Only down side is that I personally am not a big fan of the crust... they use Still Riding crust which is actually a good crust, just not my favorite... but it sure tastes better in the type of professional ovens they have than where I had it previously. Now we are just so happy to have a regular pizza place where we can once again have the choice as a family to eat in, pick up or (gasp!) get a pizza delivered to our doorstep!

Little River Inn... just south of Mendocino, CA Sep 29, 2009
reviewer: Amy from California

We stayed at the Little River Inn and had a great experience twice eating gluten free in their restaurant on site. Paul was our waiter the first meal... his girlfriend also eats GF, so he knew without checking which items on the menu were gluten free and all about how to request that the kitchen prepare my son's food without cross-contamination. The hostess (who seemed to know her way around gluten free as well) specifically set us up with Paul because of this. My son's meal was delicious... sausage with fresh fruit was what he chose, but he could have chosen many other items from their menu. The next morning we were with a very large party of about 25 people to eat there. Although Paul was not our waiter, the hostess and the waitress assigned to our group were again wonderful and seemed to understand the gluten free needs and cross-contamination issues. For both meals, all went well and my son ate delicious meals without any gluten. If there had been gluten, we certainly would have known several hours later with his reaction. All was well and delicious! I wish I could say we looked at the whole range of menu options that are gluten free, but we really only ate breakfast there. There is not a separate gluten free menu or anything - but the staff in the restaurant seemed quite informed about gluten free options. We did not speak directly with anyone from the kitchen. What we ate was wonderful! The service was very good and the food delicious. My son ate straight off the menu without requesting any alterations. The atmosphere is nice - fine for young children who can behave properly in a restaurant. The hotel itself is very nice and family friendly - the staff is quite nice... includes access to many activities (beaches, golf, etc). The views of the Pacifiic Ocean from most of the rooms are breathtaking as this is right on the coast. Dogs were allowed to stay with you in some rooms too.

Amazing Pacific Ocean views & fantastic food! Sep 29, 2009
reviewer: Amy from California

WOW! The view of the Northern California Pacific coast is awesome, the food fantastic, and the service perfect! We were heading to The Ledford House Restaurant for a reception dinner after a family wedding. I called them a few days in advance to ask whether they have gluten free options or if we would need to bring food for my son. I ended up speaking with the owners (Lisa and Tony) who knew exactly what I was talking about when I mentioned Celiac Disease and gluten free. Lisa said that it would be very easy to prepare all three of the main dishes being offered for the reception as gluten free - no really big changes at all. We arrived a day before the wedding and stopped by there briefly with the bride to drop off their wine. At that time I was able to briefly meet Lisa and Tony and put my son's face with the previous phone call. They were so kind even though it was clear they were heading into their dinner rush. The day of the meal there... my son had a fantastic meal - ate the same as everyone else except for with the appetizers that we never concern ourselves with anyway. I had not talked with them about appetizers ahead of time and they were actually ordered by the bride and groom for the whole group. He did have the salad which was delicious and prepared slightly different than the others to be gluten free. The main course offerings were lamb shank, swordfish and one other that I cannot remember. These were prepared gluten free for everyone without telling the other guests. Then when it came time for the wedding cake (which of course was not gluten free), they had the kind forethought to bring my son a dish of sorbet that was out of this world delicious (date sorbet). It was just so great that they did not even need us to ask for a special dessert - they just realized that he would need one and brought it out! Great experience eating at the Ledford House. Not necessarily a place for rowdy young kids... more of an adult restaurant - but this was the perfect place for the reception of the family wedding which included several young boys ages preschool through elementary school. The other areas of the restaurant contained small, intimate tables and a quieter venue. It is a beautiful place both inside and for the views.

Grocery store - just north of Mendocino on Hwy 1 Oct 01, 2009
reviewer: Amy from Northern California

Harvest Market is a great, local grocery store now with locations in both Mendocino, CA and in Fort Bragg, CA (just north of Mendocino on Hwy 1). This grocery carries a great selection of gluten free foods. When I phoned them (a couple of years ago), they nicely faxed me a listing of the gluten-free foods that they carry. This was a huge help to me as we were new to eating gluten free at the time. Their gluten free items are mixed in with all the other foods in their store. Now they have 2 locations... Fort Bragg (just north of Mendocino on Hwy 1 and in Mendocino proper... and according to their web site they deliver in the area too! Harvest Market 171 Boatyard Dr Boatyard Shopping Center (easy to miss, near McDonalds, look for gray wood-siding buildings for this shopping center) Fort Bragg, CA 707-964-7000 Harvest at Mendosa's 10501 Lansing St. Mendocino, CA 95460 Phone: 707-937-5879 In addition, they have added a recipes section which includes recipes for special diets including gluten free... http://www.harvestmarket.com/healthnotes.php?org=harvest&ContentID=
4559000. I found the people working in the store to be informed about gluten free products and helpful. Plus they are very "green" and have a great selection of organic produce. Definitely makes our trips to the area much easier!

Wawona Hotel Dining Room at Yosemite National Park Jan 13, 2009
reviewer: Amy

The Wawona Hotel Dining Room was a wonderful gluten-free experience for my son during our visit. We enjoyed a large portion (probably 50% was gluten free) of what they prepare for their Sunday Brunch buffet. We were also told that they have gluten-free items on their dinner menu but were unable to come back that day - unfortunately we discovered this on our last day at the park. For the most part, we cooked for ourselves in the kitchen at the house we stayed in during our trip. Since half of our food got left behind at home (long story), we were fortunate that the market in Yosemite Valley had adequate choices to make gluten free meals at home. However, other than the Ahwahnee Dining Room which is expensive and more formal, we did not find any other gluten-free options at restaurants in the Yosemite Valley. For our final day, we decided to look around for Sunday brunch options. When I called the Wawona, they were very friendly and helpful. They assured me that they are experienced in providing gluten-free options (as well as many other options for other dietary restrictions) at their dining room.... and even told me they would show us which items in their buffet were gluten free... so we decided to go. When we arrived, I made sure to tell them we had called about the gluten free items. I was pleasantly surprised when it was the chef himself who then came out to greet us. He personally walked my son and me through the buffet showing us which items were gluten-free. Near the end of the meal, I asked the waitress about dessert since there were no gluten-free options on the brunch. She happily gave me two options for dessert (we chose tapioca pudding)... when she brought out a heaping sundae dish of tapioca pudding, my son's eyes popped right out of his head in surprise! After the meal, we ended up meeting one of the kitchen staff members. She let us know that she herself has been eating gluten-free for 30 years... now it all makes sense that they understand so much about preparing gluten-free food there! I highly recommend this based on our experience.
