We were in the area of Union Market, and my husband suggested we pop in for lunch, as there are many, many food stalls. You can choose virtually any type of food. I had always wanted to try arepas, after hearing that they are typically gluten free. They are grilled corn patties that are shaped into a pocket and are typically filled with your choice of meats and cheese. I chose the shredded chicken (Pollo Mechado), and it was delicious! They do also serve something called Cachapas, which are also corn-based (and sweeter) but not gluten free. I asked them to clean an area of the grill before preparing my arepas, in order to avoid any chance of cross contamination. They happily obliged. Prices range from $6.00-$8.50. They also have a "Meat-Lovers Flight" and "Vegetarian Flight" of arepas samplers listed on their menu, but on that day, they were out of the smaller size arepas used to make those. But that would be a great way to sample several different types of arepas. If you're in this area of DC, check this place out! As I recall, there were some other food stalls that served food that was gluten free...and they have an amazing coffee shop in Union Market as well!
