Gluten free pasta and other choices at Italian restaurant chain,

Even though we had heard Macaroni Grill had gluten free options, we had not been to eat here since our son was diagnosed with Celiac many years ago. We were doing some post-Christmas errands and exchanges the other night when we needed to find a place to eat a fairly quick dinner. I thought of what was around us and remembered hearing of Macaroni Grill's GF options. We got seated within a few minutes and were presented with the allergy menu, which was basically a chart showing what allergens were in each of their menu items. The choices for someone gluten free were decent enough, with several entrees available, although often with substitutions. It was odd because some things you'd think were GF weren't, like the potatoes and roasted veggies. Pasta side dishes could be done replacing the regular pasta with GF penne. Probably the best thing to do -- if you are in the mood for pasta -- is to order from the Create Your Own pasta menu. This is an easy way for anyone -- gluten free or not -- to choose the type of pasta they want, as well as what toppings they want on it (protein like chicken, shrimp, sausage and a wide range of veggies) and also the sauce (they offer at least 6). I ordered GF pasta with spicy Arrabiata sauce, sausage, broccolini, and sun-dried tomatoes. Our GF son ordered GF pasta with shrimp, broccolini, and garlic olive oil. They were both fantastic. My wife and our other son's meals were fantastic as well, although not GF. This was a nice surprise from a restaurant we'd long forgotten, but now it will be on our regular rotation of restaurants -- whether dining in our area or when traveling. Macaroni Grill has many locations -- in most states around the country -- so they're pretty easy to find. The server also told us they have a separate area for preparing their GF dishes (and we confirmed, of course, that they use separate water for boiling the GF pasta!). A great experience overall. I'm only giving them 4.5 palms, however, because I wish they'd take the time to have a true Gluten Free Menu and figure out a way to make their potatoes, roasted veggies and other things GF so there would be more entree options (without so many substitutions) available to GF guests. They could also easily use a GF flour to bread chicken so that it would open up a much wider array of GF choices, like Chicken Parm. Perhaps in due time...
