Gluten Free Italian Food in Charleston,
July 19, 2016

As a permanent resident of Charleston and someone who has been celiac (gluten and dairy free) all my life, I have been checking out almost all of the restaurants here. I have eaten at Vincent Ciccos several times, took it for granted that they made me happy, and never thought about writing a review. But, dinner was so good on Friday night that it occurred to me that I needed to let everyone else in on my secret. As this restaurant is located on Upper King Street, and I live by the Battery (the very lower portion of King Street) it is not a place that I can walk to every day (such a shame!). For a visitor to Charleston, this is a good location as this is where you will find nightlife. But, do keep in mind, they serve lunch, as well as dinner.

This is a lovely restaurant with crisp white tablecloths and a good distance between tables. There are also booths and a bar. The service is amazing - just what you should expect in the genteel South. Everyone who waits on you is most concerned about your experience - gluten free or not.

As for the gluten free aspect of the food - there is no gluten free menu, no specific items listed. But they do have yummy gluten free pasta - cooked al dente - never mushy. This particular meal I ordered Chicken Piccata and the waiter assured me that they used rice flour to dust the breast - no wheat whatsoever. I was remiss when I ordered my salad and forgot to have them eliminate the grated cheese. NO PROBLEM. They whisked away the dish (even if I was the culprit) and brought me a brand new salad sans any dairy.

The menu is not huge but they have meat, fish, chicken, pasta options (only penne is GF but you can have other sauces) and specials of the day. They are willing to alter whatever they can to provide you with a food-safe meal. The waiter has no hesitation about speaking to the chef with any questions you may have.

The pricing is fair - the main dishes in the $20+ range with beef options higher. This is totally normal for Charleston where the good food does not come cheap.

As they say in Italian - Buon Appetito!

Fun vibe, not intimate but classy and social. Always reliable food. Very helpful staff. Easily accommodates my gluten free food allergy diet. Our favorite visit is for appetizers and wine at a booth in the bar for a fun date night kick off before hitting a few more places for the same.
