We were looking for a nice place to take my mother-in-law to celebrate her birthday. We found Barra Rossa after doing a search online. They have a VERY extensive gluten free menu ( http://www.barrarossa.com/philadelphia/gluten-free-menu/ ), full of choices like cured meats and cheeses and olives to start, other appetizers, entree salads, pizzas, pasta dishes with gluten free pasta, and meat and fish entrees. They brought gluten free bread to our table, which was actually a flatbread style...the same crust they use for their pizzas, but seasoned with olive oil and herbs (with dipping oil alongside). It was really good, and we swore it must be homemade, but apparently they get it (the pizza crust) from a food supplier. None of us were in the mood for pizza, so we didn't actually try the GF pizza. Gluten free items ordered (and enjoyed) included the Grilled Chicken Piccata, Grilled Chicken Maximus (with asparagus, roasted tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and sherry wine sauce -- shown here), and the Grilled Steak Salad. Because of our schedule, we had dinner very early, so it wasn't so crowded. The restaurant isn't huge, but I think there is seating upstairs. There is also a huge bar, which looks like it would be a great place to hang out for happy hour or a late night glass of wine. They had Frank Sinatra playing in the background, and it was a really nice, relaxing experience. The only downside is that we were sitting by a large window without a shade, and it was a tad hot in the restaurant. But I'd definitely recommend this as a good place for gluten free, especially if you are interested in a nice atmosphere and non-chain experience. As always, just be sure to tell your server (or better yet, the manager) if you are following a gluten free diet for medical reasons so they are extra careful in preparing your meal.
