We had driven up to Saluda, NC, planning to eat at a restaurant that I've visited before my diagnosis. I knew the restaurant would work with me for an entree and the flour free chocolate cake was my planned dessert! Unfortunately, The Purple Onion restaurant was closed and we were starving.
We went to the Green River BBQ restaurant and I asked the question " I cannot eat any wheat or gluten, can you fix me a meal?" The server and chef were both standing at the counter and the chef's response was "How can I help you? Tell me what you want, and I will fix it for you."
I explained that I just wanted a plain grilled chicken breast, no seasonings at all and maybe a salad. The chef reviewed each side item and told me which ones to avoid. Then sent me a great plate with plain grilled chicken, onion slaw (it was wonderful!) and collard greens. She served the hush puppies on a separate plate!
I was so pleased and grateful. Saluda is a small mountain tourist town, east of Asheville and Hendersonville, but I didn't expect such a willing and creative response to my request. I've told several people since then how much I enjoyed the food there. My boyfriend said the Pork BBQ sandwich, fresh cut french fries and my hush puppies were great!
It really made my day and helped me get over some of my fears about traveling and eating out.
