On a recent Friday afternoon while visiting Cape May, we stopped at The Red Store to enquire if they would be able to safely accommodate a gluten free diner. There are multiple options for breakfast and lunch and they bake their own gluten free bread. After looking over the dinner menu, which changes on a weekly basis according to what can be locally sourced and seasonal available, we were assured by the staff and Chef Lucas Manteca that they would be able to accommodate my gluten free diet. We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived on Saturday night, the host noted that our reservation had been marked gluten free diner and he made sure that he explained the training he had done with the wait staff and that I would be able to enjoy an incredible dining experience. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about my restriction and put us at ease. My husband and I were able to enjoy 3 incredible, unique and delicious courses. It is so rare that I am able to sample my husband's food, but I was able to since nearly everything on the menu was gluten free. The restaurant itself is warm, cozy and elegant. Throughout the dinner, which was served allowing time between courses to really enjoy each course, the host and Chef Lucas's wife and partner, Deanna Ebner stopped at each table to make sure each diner was enjoying their dining experience. I was able to pick from 3 gluten free dessert options and enjoyed a flourless chocolate cake with chopped figs. After dinner, as my husband and I were leaving, the host approached us to make sure that I was happy with my gluten free dining experience and brought me into the kitchen so that I could thank Chef Lucas. Both my husband and I are so looking forward to enjoying Chef Lucas's creations when we visit Cape May over the summer.
