Family members of ours LOVE The Narrows restaurant and
frequent it often on the way to and from Ocean City, Maryland,
but I had not been there in years. We recently learned they
offer a Gluten-Free Menu, so we decided to stop there on the
way back from a recent beach trip. Their menu is pretty
extensive -- mostly seafood and beef, along with salads and
appetizers. They are known for their amazing crab cakes, which
unfortunately aren't gluten-free. But we'd had crab cakes the
night before, so we probably wouldn't have ordered those
anyway! Both our sons ordered gluten-free dinners...one had
perfectly cooked and sliced sirloin steak, served with green
beans (instead of mashed potatoes, which are not gluten-free)
and our other son wasn't very hungry so he just ordered shrimp
cocktail and a salad.
Our server, Christine, could not have been nicer, and she was
happy to answer any questions about the menu. She "got it"
because her own son suffers from dietary restrictions. I got the
impression that the restaurant would accommodate any special
requests not on the Gluten Free Menu if they could. They were very
eager to please, which is so nice, because many
servers/chefs/restaurants don't really seem to care that much
about making their guests dining experience the best it can be.
Their Gluten Free menu is not posted online, but you can
request it when you arrive. The Narrows provided a nice
alternative in an area where there aren't a lot of gluten-free
restaurant choices...it sure beat McDonalds!!
I'd just like them to try making a gluten-free crabcake (not that
difficult to do without bread crumbs) and even using a different
brand of chicken stock in their mashed potatoes so they would
be GF (again, easy to do...Pacific Foods chicken stock and many
other brands are now GF).
