Not so great gluten free experience at restaurant in Akers, Louisiana,

Party of 7, 2 of us gluten free. Server had no idea what gluten intolerance was. Was unable to answer our questions in a manner that made us feel safe eating there. We had brought our own food just in case. When we mentioned this, the server went and got the manager. She refused to let us eat our safe food in her restaurant - which I understand - but she was very short and condescending. She said that she had been "dealing with this (gluten intolerance customers) for the past few months" and that if she let people eat outside food there, "half of our customers wouldn't be eating here because of gluten." She told us that we could probably have salad or something broiled, but still could not answer our questions. We didn't feel confident enough to order. We ate outside while the other five waited on their food.

Skip the Fried Catfish at Middendorf's -Go Broiled,

Manchac's does indeed have wonderful fried catfish, BUT they are fried in the same oil as the fried chicken. Therefore, a person with Celiac would have to stick with the broiled catfish (also very good). The waitress was very kind in answering my questions and even found out the brand of mayo used - I was able to eat the cole slaw. I would recommend going to this resaturant, but not for the fried fish!

Great seafood, and a celiac person can eat anything on the menu, because it is all cooked in cornmeal. The restaurant is especially noted for its thin, fried, and plentiful catfish. Manchac is on I-55 North where Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartain join.
