False advertising for gluten-free dining at restaurant in Waikiki,
January 24, 2012
While on a family vacation to Waikiki we were recommended a visit to the Cheesecake Factory. Obviously I was concerned by the name that there would be nothing gluten free, however a search of their website assured me they could cater to allergies and modify the menu if required. When we arrived there was a huge line up outside and we really didn't want to wait but the teenagers had their hearts set on it, so we waited (2 hours). I had a look at the extensive menu while waiting and picked out a few items which sounded like they could be gluten free. (There was no indication on the menu of ingredients/ allergen advice). However once seated, the waitress had to check on my first choice, not GF, my second, not GF, my third....by this time the poor waitress was beside herself, the other people in my group hungry and I was ready to walk out. Finally the manager arrived and said I could have a basic piece of grilled protein with mashed potato and carrot and a basic salad. No sauces. The other vegetables were washed with the water used to cook pasta. I was very disappointed to say the least. However my main complaint is that the website (and menu) claimed to be able to cater for allergies. I don't call what was offered catering.
