A Taste of Paradise -- gluten free at Ohana at Polynesian Resort, Disney World,
February 05, 2014
I was the only gluten-free diner in a party of 14, and this is a family-style restaurant.
The special diet was noted on our reservation. Upon our arrival to our table, a chef immediately came out to speak with me and discuss my options. He was knowledgeable, friendly and seemed genuinely concerned about getting it right. He also took the time to ask what I liked and took my taste into consideration when making suggestions.
I ended up with a full platter of tasty, freshly-prepared gluten-free breakfast foods, including scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns and Mickey Mouse-shaped waffles, as well as fruit and guava juice. While I didn't need it all to myself, I was happily surprised that this platter was reserved just for me to avoid cross-contamination at the table. The rest of my party shared several other platters.
As a character meal, having Mickey, Pluto, Lilo & Stitch come to our table was the bonus. The real treat was the meal. The food was delicious, the service was top-notch and the atmosphere was a lot of fun for my Hawaii-loving family.
I've often heard that Disney parks, overall, do well in providing gluten-free meals in dedicated spaces and prepared by well-trained chefs. This experience lived up to all of the hype.
