The day we skied Aspen Mountain, we chose to dine atop the mountain at the Sundeck restaurant. (There are also some other GF-friendly restaurants, Element 47 and Ajax Tavern, at the base of the mountain near the gondola in the heart of Aspen.) But those are fancier and better for dinner. For lunch, we wanted something fairly quick while on the mountain. The chef I'd contacted at Aspen Snowmass told me that they had plenty of gluten free options. It is cafeteria style, and when in line, Chef Juan Martinez helped us and told us that they had both Udi's gluten free burger buns and Udi's gluten free sandwich bread, so that most of the items could be made gluten free. He personally handled our son's order, a burger on a GF bun. Our son likes to play it safe when eating at new places, so he tends to stick with burgers or something simple. The chef told us no regular buns were put on the grill with the proteins (burgers and chicken), and he changed his gloves while preparing our son's meal. There were individually packaged WOW gluten free chocolate chip cookies here, like the other restaurants run by Aspen Snowmass. There are also plenty of other gluten free options, including custom made entree salads with protein like chicken or salmon, fruit, snack bars, and beverages. Many other items could probably be prepared gluten free...just ask the chef. For example, there's a Turkey Reuben on the Grill Menu that could probably be served on a GF Udi's bun or bread. They may also offer GF pizza at their pizza station. I believe the chef also mentioned that the chili was gluten free. It's a bit chaotic at these cafeteria-style venues on the mountains. If you can, try to eat early or late if you want to have the attention of the chef and find out the full range of gluten-free options available. We did end up having a good experience at all the mountain dining venues and felt like the chefs were knowledgeable and well-trained regarding gluten free meals...and there was always a good range of items so you didn't get bored. Our son, being only 12, just typically doesn't like anything too fancy. But for those with more sophisticated taste, I feel comfortable saying there are many, many options so that you're not just eating burgers every day! They also make great espresso beverages at the bar!
