Absolutely Wonderful Cruise To The Caribbean, Dining Gluten Free,

We recently went on the Jewel of the Seas, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, and had an amazing time. You have to let them know that you are gluten free when you are booking your vacation so that they can plan ahead. I could not have asked for anything better and felt extremely safe the whole time I was on the ship. You have to ask the chef for something to eat during lunch if you go to the Windjammer but they always made me something so wonderful. One night at dinner they made me Mexican Food (no one else had it) because I requested it. Every night was a different type of bread. The cranberry bread was to die for. I did not have a bad meal the whole time and the cruise was just great! You have to advocate for yourself and be sure you eat what they tell you and you will have a wonderful trip with no problems.

I try to deal with my gluten-free diet as unobtrusively as I can, especially in social situations because I don't care to discuss my health and the symptoms of gluten problems-both of which don't make for lovely conversation. In order to arrange things for the cruise and have as little fuss as possible on the cruise, I filled out the pre-cruise information that I was gluten-free and called the Special Services Dept. They assured me that there would be gluten-free baked goods onboard for me. Little did I know that they meant a loaf of gluten free rice bread (right out of the supermarket). Had they been honest beforehand, I would have brought my own baked goods. On the cruise, they were unresponsive to toasting the bread apart from the regular bread, and one of the food preparers even argued with me that he had brushed off the other crumbs! It took three days and meetings with the maitre'd, the Food and Beverage Manager, and the head chef to make the point that what I wanted was a slice of bread toasted separately and one person to ask for it in the morning. They did attempt to bake some gluten-free something or other, but it was so dry and tasteless that I couldn't even choke it down. My toast came burned or cold...They never would have served burned, undercooked, or stale baked goods to the other passengers, and, in fact, I never saw anything presented in that condition either in the buffet or dining room. My problem was added to because I am allergic to eggs and a few other foods leaving my breakfast choices very narrow. The toast was almost all I could eat. Fortunately, the evening waiter was terrific and steered me to the things on the menu that were safe since so many choices were either breaded or had some type of crust or pastry. If I ever go on a cruise again, I will have all the information in place beforehand in order to know exactly what they will have for me and who will be my contact person. Needless to say, this started my days on a very negative note, and it was a challenge to keep positive. I would not suggest going on this ship in the Celebrity line although I have read better reviews for other ships that Celebrity cruises. I am giving 1.5 palms for the rating regarding the gluten-free issue. I would give 5 palms for the rest of the cruise including the stops, the side excursions, entertainment, etc.
