We dined at Tommy Bahama restaurant in Newport Beach and
had a wonderful experience. This had been one of our favorite
places to go for dinner over the years whenever we had an
opportunity to travel to this part of California (they have about a
dozen other locations around the U.S., but this is the only one
we've ever been to). We heard they had a gluten-free menu, so
we decided to give it a try with a large group of family members.
There were about 12 of us dining for lunch on a Sunday, and in
addition to handling our gluten-free requests, they were able to
handle some garlic-free requests as well (several members of
my extended family have reactions to heavy garlic). Even
though the Newport Beach location does not have a gluten-free
menu in the restaurant or posted on their website like they do
for some of their other locations, the chef (who the server
pointed out was a true "chef" and not a "cook") was well aware
of gluten-free food prep and was aware of every single
ingredient that goes into all their items on the menu. So they
handled our special requests beautifully. The gluten-free diner at
our table ordered the ribs, which were presented "dry" (without
sauce) b/c the blackberry bourbon sauce does contain gluten.
The report was they they were very good. They were served
with roasted potatoes (fries were not gluten-free) and a nice
fruit cup. There were plenty of other choices on the
menu...including salads, fish, other meat, etc. They would
probably be able to tailor many items on the menu to be gluten-
free. I love the island flavors of this restaurant...their
preparations are always so delicious and fresh and unique.
Giving them a call before dining there may be a good idea just so they know a gluten-free diner is coming (it never
hurts to give a "heads-up").
