Our family spent the week of Spring Break in Southern
California and decided to venture to Disneyland for a day. Since
the Disney company tends to be very well-versed in the
subject of gluten-free dining, we didn't sweat the details of our
meal planning too much. I found a mention online of the
Storytellers Cafe in the Grand Californian Hotel, which is
located in Downtown Disney, right between and within walking
distance of both Disneyland and California Adventure. They
supposedly had many gluten-free items to choose from on
their menu. We booked a reservation a few days before our
trip, but we did not talk to the chef in advance.
The Storytellers Cafe is a cozy restaurant with fireplaces, a nice
respite from the more casual restaurants in the park itself,
where it can sometimes be hard to communicate with the
chefs among all the harried parents and kids. When we were
seated for dinner at our table, we did ask to speak to the chef,
but unfortunately, our server could not find him in "his office."
Strange, but it was early...5:30 pm. No worries, however,
because our server was familiar with the gluten-free options.
Our son (the only one in our family with Celiac) chose the
gluten-free pizza, which was available with a range of toppings
as well. It turned out to be one of the best gluten-free pizzas,
due to the delicious crust. The rest of us opted for the buffet,
which also had several choices which happened to be gluten-
free, including prime rib, a chicken dish, mashed potatoes,
salads, and fruit. The icing on the cake (literally) was a gluten-
free flourless chocolate cheesecake for dessert. It was great
that our son was able to indulge with the rest of us! The
Storytellers Cafe proved to be a relaxing, civilized and happy
ending to a fun-filled day in the parks.
