Dining gluten free on Blackcomb Mountain, Whistler British Columbia,
March 29, 2013
South Riding, VA
Today, after skiing for the morning on Blackcomb Mountain, we ate at the Glacier Creek Lodge on Blackcomb, conveniently located at the base of the Jersey Cream Express and Glacier Express lifts. This was one of the mountainside restaurants that was listed on the Whistler Blackcomb website as having gluten free options -- basically burgers, GF buns, sandwiches on GF break, and some gluten free baked goods. When I inquired about the gluten free options (which were also noted with an icon on the menus that were posted throughout this cafeteria style venue), I was given the same response I had been given at another lodge on the mountain. They had GF buns, but either the burgers weren't gluten free -- or they weren't sure if they were. Okay...but they have gluten free buns! Go figure! Well, fortunately, our son was able to order a gluten free grilled chicken sandwich (with bacon) on a gluten free bun. They grilled the bun on a clean area of the grill. Their other "regular" buns aren't even grilled on the grill...they are put in one of those toasters for buns, so there was no chance of cross contact. Our son was very happy -- and devoured his chicken "burger." They also had "low gluten" muffins and some pre-packed gluten free cookies. Our son chose a chocolate chip cookie and raved about it, giving me just a tiny bite to sample! How could I take more from him when this was the first GF "treat" on the mountain we'd found?! A good lunch experience, to be sure! They do have other things that are GF: some soups, and a sandwich bar that apparently offers GF bread. So this is a good bet for a lunch break on Blackcomb Mountain.
