My husband and I went to the Javalina Cantina on Route 179 in Sedona the other day. We were going to stop in just for a Margarita but my husband really loves Mexican food and it's kind of hard to find a place where I can eat safely. He decided to ask the bartender if they had a gluten free menu. She said they didn't but she had been asked that question before. She told us the chef had 25 years experience in the restaurant business and was totally aware of what a Gluten Free diet entails and went into the kitchen to ask him what I would be safe ordering. She came back to tell me that aside from the obvious of anything wrapped in a flour tortilla.... the steak fajitas (they are marinated in beer) and the rice (cooked with chicken broth that has gluten in it) I should be totally fine to order anything else. ALL the sauces are Gluten Free. Made there by the chef daily (including the enchilada sauce!). I'm not sure about the usual cross contamination that is found in the fried foods but the taco in the fried shell didn't effect me. (then again I'm not always as sensitive as some other people. Sometimes it depends on the day). They may fry the taco shells individually. Just ask.
I ordered the Chicken Asada Enchilada and Beef Machaca Taco Combo with beans (yummy beans). I had no issues whatsoever except maybe a slight headache (my own fault) from the two delicious Chambord margaritas I drank made by the very sweet bartender Samantha.
I totally recommend this restaurant next time you're up in Sedona. Just ask your server to tell the chef that you have to be gluten free. I hope your experience will be as good as ours was!
