Chick's is a small, family lodge catering mostly to game hunters but is also situated near some of the wonderful KZN provincial game-viewing parks.
I was the first guest they'd had requesting gluten-free food. The co-owner/chef, Christy, knew just a little about gluten-free foods, but she was very eager to learn what I could and could not eat. She invited me into her kitchen, and we went through many of the items on her shelves together. We looked at ingredient lists and talked about what ingredients to watch for. Fortunately, some of the products in South Africa are now labeled with allergy information, and a number of items state whether or not they contain gluten.
Christy made an extra effort to cook separate versions of each meal for me using dedicated cookware and all I taught her. My meals tended to be unseasoned or very plain compared to the other guests, but I believe now that Christy knows more, she can plan tastier gluten-free meals.
The next guest to request gluten-free food should have a much easier time, especially if you let Christy know ahead of time. Feel free to tell her your likes and dislikes, too. She's very easy to talk to and very accommodating. If I returned there, I would feel very comfortable dining and would not bring any of my own snacks.
The resort itself is very simple but extremely comfortable. The Chick's will bend over backward to help you in any way they can with whatever activities you want to do in the area. There's excellent game viewing and birdwatching right from the porch of your room.
