TOUR NORTHERN NORWAY AND THE ARCTIC, WHILE STAYING SAFELY GLUTEN FREE
Choose any date of travel (this is an individual itinerary, not a group trip)
Gluten Free Travel-Us owner Ellen Morse has planned an amazing and exciting itinerary to northern Norway and the Arctic, which you can take anytime between October 17, 2017 and March 27, 2018 (departing on either a Tuesday or Saturday). This is not a group tour, but rather, a suggested itinerary that can be added to and further customized, if desired. You will be visiting Tromso and Senja Island. Tromso is known as the Gateway to the Arctic, with the most Northern Lights in the world! It's located in the middle of the Aurora Borealis (northern lights) zone and is one of the best places in the world to observe this phenomenon. You'll also get to visit off-the-beaten-track island of Senja for three nights. This is truly a magical trip, and you will not have to worry about how you will dine gluten free. All hotels and restaurants have been vetted for their ability to offer safe gluten free meals. As always, Ellen tends to the details so you can relax and enjoy this incredible journey.
Day 1: Arrival in Tromso
Arrive in Tromso and make your way to your city center hotel on your own or by private transfer. There is much to do and see in Tromso. If you need some assistance in planning your arrival day, just let Ellen know.
Day 2: Tromso to Senja
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. You will take a boat from Tromso to Finnsnes, which takes about 75 minutes and lets you experience coastal nature. A driver will pick you up in the boat terminal in Finnsnes, and you will drive through the beautiful scenery of Senja island for about 1 hour. You will be accommodated in a comfortable apartment hotel. Dinner will be served in the cozy maritime-style restaurant. There will be time to relax or go for a short walk in the evening. This willl be your first of three nights staying on Senja Island.
Day 3: Senja Island
After breakfast, you will meet your guide and make the necessary plans for the next couple of days with regards to the current season and weather conditions. In daylight, you will go for a boat/bus fjord safari to see wildlife and the untamed marine landscape (about 3 hours). You will have lunch en-route or upon your return to Mefjordvar. After having some time to relax in the afternoon, you'll enjoy a traditional Norwegian dinner, served in the early evening. This will allow you to have time to get ready for the nighttime activity. Your guide will take you to some remote spots to see Northern Lights. You will visit scenic vantage points where it is possible to admire Aurora Borealis without light pollution. Pure magic!
Day 4: Senja Island
After breakfast, you will do something different from the day before. Depending on the season, you will take a bus/boat/snow-shoeing trip to see different types of Senja nature. In case of "bad" weather, you will go on a special minibus trip to see the harsh Arctic coast and power of the Norwegian Sea waters (about 3 hours). Lunch will be either en-route or upon your return to Mefjordar. You will be surprised how different Senja looks depending on time of the day and weather conditions. Dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant. After that, you will set out for more nighttime explorations in the area (walking or by minibus) for 2-3 hours. The guide will share many interesting facts about nature in Senja, and you will have plenty of time to take pictures. You can finish off the day by relaxing in a sauna.
Day 5: Hurtigruten Boat from Finnsnes to Tromso
On this day, you will depart for a one-hour journey to Finnsnes after breakfast. Here, you will catch the Hurtigruten boat that will take you back to Tromso. You arrive in Tromso mid-afternoon. Then you will be able to enjoy the remainder of the day and evening at your leisure. You will stay overnight in Tromso.
Day 6: Departure from Tromso
You will depart from Tromso independently or by private transfer service for your flight home. If desired, you can add time to your stay to visit other areas of Norway or neighboring Scandinavian countries.
PLEASE NOTE: IN THIS SPECIAL SITUATION, IF WE CAN GET A NUMBER OF TRAVELERS WISHING TO GO AT THE SAME TIME, WE COULD CREATE A GROUP TRIP IF YOU DESIRE.
