Gluten Free Getaways: Gluten-Free Sojourn to Athens and the Greek Islands

Choose any date of travel (this is an individual itinerary, not a group trip).

Gluten Free Travel-Us has worked very hard to bring their gluten free clients the opportunity to visit Greece, in conjunction with the very reputable company, Kensington Tours. This has been a "Bucket List" destination for so many people, and no wonder. The natural beauty of the Greek islands, the fascinating history and unsurpassed archeological sites, and the warmth of the Greek people combine to make this a must-see destination indeed. This sample itinerary begins in the capital, Athens, and includes a private tour led by an expert guide that will introduce you to both modern and ancient Athens, including historic sites like the Temple of Athena Nike, the Arch of Hadrian, the Parthenon, and Panathenaic Stadium, site of the first modern Olympics in 1894. You'll continue on to the two most popular (and beautiful) Greek Islands, Mykonos and Santorini, with a day-trip to the island of Delos to see its amazing ancient ruins. In your travels, you'll experience unique culture, delicious gluten free Greek specialties, and heavenly wines.

Because relaxation is a big part of the Greek Islands' allure, this itinerary allows for plenty of "down time" on your own to explore, unwind, shop, or take a trip to a beach. This is not a group tour but a trip you can take at any time and with anyone you choose. As always, you are the "captain of your boat" with Ellen Morse and any Gluten Free Travel-Us itinerary, so you can customize the trip to make it your own. Pricing depends on your length of stay, point of departure, and other factors. Ellen suggests visiting this destination between April and October.

As always, Ellen and Kensington Tours have vetted the hotels and suggested restaurants for their level of gluten knowledge. Ellen will suggest safe places to eat so that you can enjoy delicious Greek food without worrying about staying food-safe. Ellen and Kensington Tours will handle all the details so you can relax and enjoy the beauty of Greece! Below is a suggested itinerary for consideration.

The remainder of your day will be yours to relax at the hotel or explore the surrounding area. You will stay at this thoroughly vetted hotel in Athens for 3 nights.

During your half-day tour, your private guide will take you on a walk of the sea front past the local fish and vegetable market. You will also have an opportunity to meet the island's mascot, Peter the pelican. On your way to Paraportiani Church, a famous sample of Cycladic architecture and one of the most photographed spots of the Mediterranean, you will visit the Folklore Museum, situated in a beautiful house from the 11th century. Continue on to the picturesque Alefkandra, an area known as the "Little Venice" of Mykonos with the old captain houses built into the sea. The Windmills opposite Little Venice were used in the past to grind wheat, and from here you'll enjoy beautiful views of Little Venice and the sea. Then continue to the House of Lena where you can see the style of furniture and personal belongings of the family. Before returning to the hotel, enjoy a Greek "meze," including various Greek dips and olives, feta cheese, and tomatoes in a local tavern. While you enjoy a wine tasting, your guide will tell you about the history of Greek wines.

Day 6: Mykonos/Delos

Depart from your hotel with a private vehicle and guide, towards the Old Port of Mykonos Town from where the local public ferries to Delos depart. After a short sailing of 30-35 minutes, you will arrive at Delos. Delos, an islet of the Aegean, nowadays uninhabited, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Delos is the legendary birthplace of the twin gods, Apollo and Artemis. Remains of temples and residences on Delos are dating back from the Neolithic to the Roman periods. The tour includes a visit of the remains of the Temple of Apollo, the Sanctuary of Artemis, the Old city and Theater, and a walk down the celebrated Lion Street. Also, in the Museum of Delos, visitors have the chance to admire Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman sculptures, a collection of vessels from all periods, as well as items of everyday use. Return back to Mykonos Town with transfer to your hotel. (Note: If you prefer to do something even more active on this day, Ellen can arrange for a bike tour of Mykonos instead of the day-trip to Delos. You would stop for a swim at a non-touristy beach and also enjoy a beach picnic.)

End your tour with a stop at Santo Wines and taste one of the most famous wines in Santorini.

Day 9: Santorini

Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace or relax at your hotel. If you prefer to do something active, Ellen can arrange for a 3-hour hike on a magnificent path with changing views of the volcano as you wind your way to end up in the town of Oia. Plans could alternatively be made for a cruise and snorkeling.

Day 10: Depart Santorini
