We had a wonderful meal at this Italian restaurant in Reston. They have a 2 page, extensive gluten free menu. (On their website, however, they only mention their gluten free pasta available with 4 different sauces and their gluten free pizza...along with a note that many other items can be prepared gluten free.)

Indeed, they CAN prepare many menu items gluten free, as evidenced by their large selection on the printed gluten free menu available at the restaurant. There are antipasti, gluten free pizzas, salads, sides, chef's specialties, pasta, chicken, veal, fish, and seafood dishes. It was hard to decide what to order, because everything sounded so tempting.

I ordered the gluten free version of the Pasta Gregorio, which is gluten free ravioli (they buy it from somewhere else) with shrimp, crabmeat, and rose sauce (pictured below). It was amazingly delicious.

In addition to the gluten free ravioli, which can be ordered with different sauces, they have gluten free spaghetti and gluten free penne, too. Their website says it is quinoa pasta. Our son ordered the gluten free pasta with Vongole (white clam) sauce, and the leftover pasta was even good the next day, which is rare for gluten free pasta. My husband ordered a gluten free spaghetti with a tomato-based sauce and sausage.

At the beginning of the meal, we asked the waiter about whether the gluten free pasta was cooked in a separate pot of water and if separate utensils were used. He assured us that they prepare all their gluten free orders separately and have many people coming to the restaurant that are gluten free for medical they take it seriously.

We didn't have any issues, save for the salad (that comes with each meal) arriving with croutons on it. Woops! When we pointed this out, it was quickly whisked away with a new one (we made sure of it) delivered to us with apologies. That's the only reason I'm giving this restaurant a 4-palm rating instead of 5.

Just go through the typical questions with your server -- or better yet, the manager -- and be sure to tell them (again, just to be extra safe) that you are on a gluten free diet for medical reasons (if that is truly the case) to ensure they take great care in preparing your meal. This restaurant was a wonderful new discovery for us, and we actually already have plans to dine there again.

Gregorio's Trattoria used to be part of the Mamma Lucia's local chain. Mamma Lucia's is still around, but this location, and another in Potomac, MD are now Gregorio's. As I had eaten at Mama Lucia's in the past, I knew they would have gluten-free pasta; but what I didn't know was they had gluten-free ravioli! They also had penne and spaghetti, but I went with the ravioli with a spicy arribiatta sauce. It was cooked perfectly (not too mushy) and the sauce was a good as ever.
