Clyde's owns a range of good restaurants in the Washington, DC area and its Northern Virginia and Maryland suburbs. We visited the one in Reston Town Center, which has some outdoor seating and is very nice. All their restaurants have a different theme. Some are really spectacular, like the Tower Oaks Lodge in Rockville, which is a beautiful log-cabin style -- and if visited in the winter with snow on the ground makes you feel like you're in the Rocky Mountains. Clyde's Willow Creek in Ashburn, Virginia is made up on reconstructed old barns from New England that were disassembled and transported here. It also has a beautiful outdoor terrace area for dining. But now...for the food. This is great restaurant...you can always get a good meal at any of their locations. We had never brought our son here to dine gluten-free, however, but had heard they were good about special diets. We spoke to the manager once we sat down, and she assured us the chef could make/tailor many things on the menu to be gluten-free. They were very aware of cross-contamination, too -- so much so that they didn't want to serve our son the mashed potatoes, not because they necessarily contained gluten, but because they were concerned with the prep area around them being contaminated with gluten. The fries, too, were off-limits since they share a fryer with other gluten-containing foods. There wasn't much on the kids menu that our son could have, other than a plain hamburger (without the bun, of course...but we had brought our own). Other choices on the kids menu were standard fare: mac and cheese, pizza, hot dog, grilled cheese. But no worries...the adult menu is typically healthier and more interesting anyways. So we ordered our sons a petit filet to split, and they brought it with fingerling potatoes and green beans. Other items on their menu include other steaks, pork chops, roasted chicken, various fish and seafood dishes and entree salads. Many could probably be ordered, but always speak with the manager or chef to be sure. Like I said, this is a place where you can definitely get a safe, gluten-free meal...you just need to be a bit flexible as they don't have a printed "gluten-free" menu and many of their selections change depending on the season and the particular location. They are happy to work with you.
