This was undoubtedly one of the most fantastic meals I've ever had -- in both taste and presentation. However, I have to say upfront that we did not order gluten-free, per se, since our son (the only one in the family with Celiac) was not with us. This was a special occasion celebration for my husband and me, and what a choice it was! We DID, however, inquire as to whether they could accommodate gluten-free requests, and the answer from our waiter was a resounding "yes." It seemed that many of the items on the menu would have been naturally gluten-free, or if not, easy to tailor. This is the type of restaurant where the chef knows everything that goes into the food, so I'm sure they could accommodate all sorts of special diets. We opted for the 4- course price-fixe menu, which was not cheap, but worth every penny. I ordered the mushroom crepe appetizer (obviously not GF); a wonderful salad with beets, goat cheese, and candied walnuts (and beautiful edible flowers); duck a l'orange; and an incredible vanilla bean creme brulee for dessert. My husband ordered a squash soup, more basic salad, the same duck, and a to-die-for chocolate creation for dessert. I enjoy a gourmet meal just like the next person, but I'm also the type of person who gets frustrated with small portions where there's so much emphasis on presentation (at the expense of portions) that you leave feeling hungry (after having spent a small fortune). The Goodstone Inn is not that type of place. It is s the perfect balance of excellent food and beautiful presentation, and you leave feeling immensely satisfied...niether stuffed nor hungry. The service is attentive, without being overly so, and it is a charming and cozy dining room, in what appears to be a renovated carriage house. The Goodstone Inn is just that...an Inn/B&B, but since we live within about 30 minutes, we did not stay but just went for dinner. We were not able to see the beautiful grounds or explore much of the property since it was dark when we were there. I'd love to go back in the summer for dinner so we could really check out the property, which is nestled in rolling hills about 2 miles north of the main road running through historic Middleburg, Virginia. What a wonderful "secret" we discovered that evening...and to think we'd never before heard about it...it was an Internet find. We will definitely be back, and if you're gluten-free, I'd simply suggest you try to talk with the chef or manager when making your reservation. I'd give this restaurant 5 palms -- or even more! -- except for the fact that things are not labeled Gluten Free on the menu. And since we didn't specifically request our dinners be prepared gluten-free, we can't fully evaluate the experience from that perspective on this visit. Yet another reason to go back...
