Expanded gluten free menu at restaurant in Fairfax, VA,

We dined at this restaurant -- one of our favorite local "gluten free friendly" restaurants -- yesterday for Father's Day. To our pleasant surprise, we found they'd recently expanded their gluten free menu to include even more options. They were able to do this because they recently changed the butter they cook with (they previously used a soy butter that actually contained gluten). They also switched to a gluten free tamari sauce instead of typical soy sauce. The ribs are gluten free -- as is the Hong Kong Style Sea Bass -- in addition to steaks and some chicken and fish dishes. (I almost always order their fish of the day -- whatever it is -- because it is always divine -- prepared perfectly with wonderful sides. (Yesterday, it was halibut on top of corn grits, shown below, covered with a smattering of pesto and greens) Their fries are also gluten free -- fried in a separate fryer. I questioned them at length about the fries, since they previously did not have them on the Gluten Free Menu. That was due to the fact that when they filter the oil from the fryers, they were concerned there might be a chance for cross contamination from the other fryers. But they sent the oil out to be tested at a lab, and it was shown not to contain gluten. They do not have their Gluten Free Menu posted on their website, but they do have one available upon request at the restaurant. Save room for the gluten free flour less chocolate waffle for dessert. It is worth every calorie!

Great group of restaurants,

We live in Northern Virginia, and we are fortunate to have a group of restaurants under the ownership of Great American Restaurants throughout the area. One of our favorite restaurants, Coastal Flats, currently has two locations -- one in Fairfax and the other in the Tysons Corner Mall. It's a hip, casual, 1950's coastal-florida inspired seafood house. The food is delicious. Best of all, they have a pretty extensive gluten-free menu, including many interesting salads (with just minor modifications like asking them to hold the croutons), several fish/seafood dishes, and two steaks. And to end the meal? Well, a warm flourless chocolate waffle, of course! Our whole family -- young kids included -- enjoys dining there. Other restaurants in the group include Sweetwater Tavern, Artie's, Mike's, and Carlyle Grand -- all of which also provide menus for gluten-free diners. The only downside is that they all tend to be pretty popular restaurants, and there can be a wait at peak hours. They don't take reservations, but they have a "call ahead" list to reduce your wait time.
