This past weekend one of our sons had a hockey game in Charlottesville, and we drove down there from our home in the suburbs of Washington, DC. It was a long drive -- taking us much longer than it should have, due to a snowstorm. We had grand plans to tour Monticello in the afternoon once we got down there, but even if we had made it down sooner, the option was off the table due to the weather. They had closed Monticello for the day. We figured that was fine -- we'd check into our hotel, relax a bit, and then go out for a nice dinner at one of the many "gluten-free friendly" restaurants in the area (Travinia Italian Kitchen and Burton's Grill being on the top of our list of possibilities). However, we quickly found, upon calling these restaurants, that they were either closed or closing before the dinner hour, due to the continued snowfall and slick roads. We probably called a total of about 10 restaurants to find them all closed. We finally found one -- Mellow Mushroom right near the University of Virginia campus -- that planned to stay open. We were on our way there, when our directions suggested taking a side street which looked pretty treacherous. Fortunately, I spotted a Brixx Wood Fired Grill right along the main road, and I remembered they offered gluten free pizza. We had never been to one before, and I wasn't sure ALL locations offered gluten free pizza, so I popped in to ask. Fortunately, that location does have them -- as well as a whole gluten free menu including many entree salads, too. And although they had also decided to close and weren't seating any more parties, they offered us the option of ordering take-out. They were very nice, and before ordering, I explained that our son was on a gluten free diet due to Celiac and confirmed that they take precautions when preparing their gluten free pizzas. They do -- the pizzas are cooked in the pan the crusts come in (they use a brand called Rich's), and a separate pizza cutter is used. We ordered three gluten free pizzas and a Mediterranean salad. We took it back to our hotel, and everything was delicious (of course, at this point, we were just happy to be eating!!). But aside from the pizza crust being a bit undercooked (if I were to go to this location again, I'd request they cook it a couple minutes longer than usual), the pizza was very good. Even though the crust was less "crusty" than I like, it tasted fine (actually, it was pretty tasteless, so you really couldn't not like it). It was a thin crust and so therefore really let the flavors of the toppings shine. I LOVED my Rosemary Chicken Pizza, and in addition to the rosemary chicken, caramelized onions, and mushrooms that come on it, I also added artichokes. It was one of the best-tasting pizzas I've had in recent memory. My husband got a gluten free pepperoni pizza which he agreed was quite good (again, great toppings), and our son got his favorite: a gluten free Hawaiian pizza. He really enjoyed it, too. The Mediterranean salad was fantastic, too, with a homemade gluten free feta dressing. After this dining experience, I found myself wishing we had a Brixx Wood Fired Pizza location near us, and I look forward to looking for them again when we travel! We were so glad they were among the few restaurants that stayed open in the snowstorm that night!
