We have always really liked this Italian restaurant in the Stone Ridge shopping center, but we hadn't felt comfortable taking our younger son with Celiac there, since they didn't appear to have any designated gluten free options.

However, I recently learned that Ciro, the owner, is able to prepare many of his entrees gluten free (if they aren't already) and also offers gluten free pasta and pizza!

I talked to him extensively on the phone before dining at the restaurant with our entire family a couple weeks ago, and he assured me he and his staff are very aware of avoiding cross contamination. In fact, his daughter has some serious food allergies, so he is personally in tune with the concerns of families who have dietary restrictions.

The brand of gluten free pasta they use is Sam's Mill, which I've heard a lot about (I like that it's non-GMO) but never been able to find in my local grocery stores. They have both gluten free penne and gluten free spaghetti available. My son ordered gluten free spaghetti with white clam sauce, and he loved it. I had a taste, too -- it was delicious. They do, of course, cook the pasta in its own separate pot of water and use a clean, separate colander, utensils, etc. But always remind them when ordering in order to be completely safe.

I ordered salmon and vegetables, also gluten free. They do not use rue (flour and water) to thicken their sauces, and everything they serve is made from scratch, so they know all the ingredients that go into each dish.

We did not try the gluten free pizza (that will have to wait for our next visit), but Ciro told us it is Conte's brand, which is cooked in the tray it comes with and even served with its own special knife for cutting. They take great care to avoid cross-contamination with this, as with everything else.

Again, most of the menu can be made gluten free -- just ask for Ciro. He is there most Friday and Saturday nights. On other nights when he is at his other restaurant in Centreville, he recommended asking for his daughter Laura or one of his managers, Rudi or Richard. They are all trained on how to handle gluten free orders, but of course, as in any restaurant, I always recommend being very specific in your requests and asking all the requisite questions.

I'd highly recommend this restaurant. The food is wonderful, and they will take care of you. I'd just recommend going for dinner on the early side, so you don't hit them right during their busy time. That way, they'll be able to spend more time talking with you and caring for your order.

One other thing to mention: we recently had Ciro's cater a dinner at our church, and they did a lovely job. They made all the Chicken Piccata gluten free and made a version of gluten free baked ziti that was wonderful -- and nearly indistinguishable from the "regular" baked ziti. All the gluten free guests at the dinner were thrilled.
