In a town dominated by equal parts bar food and pricey gourmet establishments, Angkor Wat provides a very welcome infusion of affordable, healthy, and delicious Asian cuisine. The lure of Cambodian food was exciting enough to bring us in the first week of its opening, but what keeps us coming back is the great food and absolutely top notch accommodation for Celiacs. Chef/Owner Sunny Tuckerman uses Hoisin sauce or various curries as the base for his meals, so Celiacs need not face the dreaded soy sauce question. Although the menu does not say so, Sunny will tailor almost any dish to your needs. He’ll substitute rice noodles for Japanese-style wheat noodles, brown rice for the usual white, add veggies or tofu, substitute your choice of meat(s), or make most meals vegetarian. And don’t be afraid to ask questions - Sunny regularly comes out to chat with customers, and the servers - who include Sunny’s wife Monica and mother-in-law Sue - are friendly, helpful, and willing to accommodate practically any dietary need. Since finding out about my husband’s gluten intolerance, Sunny has regularly experimented with new gluten free dishes - and we’ve been the grateful beneficiaries! All of Angkor Wat’s tasty desserts are gluten free, which practically sent my husband into raptures. Sunny makes a variety of fantastic personal-sized cheesecakes with almond and coconut crusts, plus a fancy dessert with fruit and chocolate filled spring roll wrappers topped with ice cream. Yummy!!! Meal prices are extremely reasonable at $10-13. Here are a few of our favorites: Appetizers • Turkey spring roll • Summer roll w/ mint and basil • Grilled chicken strips Entrees • Vegetarian Stir-Fry Noodles w/ Tofu (ask for rice noodles) • Ginger Chicken w/ Carrots • Asian Salad w/ Cellophane Noodles & Peanut Sauce • Khtieau Cambodian Style Rice Noodle Soup • Khmer Curry Chicken Soup • Beef Chow Foon w/ “Rice Flake” Noodles Desserts • Cheesecake!!! Any variety is delicious, but for something different try the Lemongrass & Thyme. Key Lime, Chocolate Mint, and Ginger are new flavors that Sunny is working on now. We taste-tested two last night - more winners to add to the list! • For something really unusual and special, try the Dessert Spring Rolls. You can mix and match flavors such as mango, coconut, banana, strawberry, and chocolate. We like to match a Mango w/ a Chocolate & Strawberry. Specials - CALL AHEAD • For a really magnificent treat, call a few days ahead and ask if Sunny can cook you his Crispy Ginger Fish. It’s a deep fried whole tilapia coated in a special ginger sauce, with a side of stir-fried veggies. The fish is moist and delicious and the ginger both spicy and sweet. Plus, that big ol’ fish just looks so cool on the plate! • If you’re going to be in town for a few days, call and BEG Sunny to bake a batch of his gluten-free blueberry muffins. Then BUY THE WHOLE BATCH. I kid you not - these are the best GF muffins we’ve ever eaten, bar none. You’re gonna want to stockpile them in your freezer. He gave us two for breakfast this morning and it took all my husband’s will power not to steal my muffin and scarf it down before I woke up! If you love the dishes and want to try some at home, Angkor Wat also has a small “Deli” section where you can pick up Asian staples. We highly recommend the Rice Flake noodles! Cook them “al dente” and stir-fry them in a little peanut or canola oil, wheat-free tamari, ginger, and garlic until they are slightly browned. Set them aside and then stir-fry the rest of your ingredients. Mix everything together just before serving. This is a real treat if you are used to serving your stir-fries on top of rice. (It does, of course, up the calories, but it is oooooh so good!!) Sunny can also do special “family style” servings and pricing for big groups. He cooks buffet-style dishes for meetings, and he will also bake custom desserts for special occasions. If you can’t host your next big event in Woodstock, figure out a way for him to ship you a cheesecake. It'd be worth it. Angkor Wat is located along Route 4 on the eastern fringes of Woodstock Village, which means that many travelers don’t bother to stop in. However, most folks don’t realize how easy it is to walk to the edge of town. Angkor Wat is an easy 10 minute stroll from the center of town along sidewalks the whole way. (A real joy when all the fruit trees and lilacs are in bloom.) For those of you traveling in your own car, Angkor Wat has ample free parking behind the restaurant - a real rarity around Woodstock. If you are traveling to Woodstock on a bus tour, let your driver know that Angkor Wat is located just across the street from the bus waiting lot. Most drivers will let you stay on the bus while they park, then you can catch lunch at Angkor Wat and walk into town to meet the rest of your tour group afterward; the drivers will pick you up at the bus station on the Town Green at the end of your stay. And hey, if you make it to Angkor Wat on a Friday evening, look for us - in all likelihood we’ll be there!
