Gluten-free Dining in Istanbul's Karaköy Area,

The chef/owner of Lakanta maya, Didem Senol, is both a graduate of Manhattan's French Culinary Institute and a student of Istanbul's famous Mehmet Gürs. Her education clearly shines through in the dishes she prepares and through the awareness of servers and other staff about eating issues such as the need for some customers to be gluten-free. Lokanta maya is located in the emerging Karaköy area which is in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul along the European side of the Bosphorous, just steps from the Galata Bridge. After sampling a few restaurants in this area it appears that the rule of thumb is this is where you can go to get a more contemporary twist on Turkish fare. As usual, my first move is to pull out my iphone app which has the Turkish translation of the requirements of eating gluten-free. In many other restaurants the server studies it very closely but it is typically accompanied by some head scratching. Not here. As I handed our server the translation and mentioned that is for being gluten-free he immediately asked me if I had celiac (he said it in Turkish which was basically the same). When I happily told him I did -- not happy I have it but happy he knew about it -- he assured me that they handle specific dietary requirements all the time and that celiac was very familiar to him. He told me he would talk to his chef and also help me with my selections. He then gave me a tip about the white rice in Istanbul; almost all white rice served in Istanbul contains some brown colored orzo which is of course a big no no. My meal consisted of some tomato and bean salad dressed with olive oil, grilled Calamari with sautéed spinach, and I shared a grilled Bonito. Everything was excellent and as our server handed out the orders to the rest of the table he also made a point of telling me what I should not share with anyone else. I left being both extremely satisfied with my meal and also in the knowledge that this was a place that understood what needs to be done for gluten-free patrons.

The food is delicious and worth paying premium rates. We had a bit of a communication problem at first, but once Moustafa became involved there was no problem at all. He completely understood celiac disease and he was very happy to comply with the dietary restrictions. I was so impressed with their gluten free bread, served with a ball of heavenly soft goat cheese. There are only two other restaurants where I received this level of service: Charlie Trotters in Chicago and French Laundry in Napa (however, they bake their own gluten free breads). Feriye is in good company! Make sure to plan a visit. Patty M.
