Dining Gluten Free at Vanderbilt Univ in Nashville,

The Vanderbilt chefs are very knowledgeable and willing to help out with special diets! They really encourage the students to ask them to prepare special meals in order to avoid cross-contamination. I talked with them at the beginning of the year, and they recognize me whenever I come in to the dining halls. They are awesome! However, I did not like having to wait a while before getting my food, and I preferred getting meals from the on-campus convenience stores. Vandy does bring in delicious muffins and brownies from local gluten-free bakeries, and the convenience stores (Munchie Marts) will have gluten-free frozen meals. These are great, but at times, the stores would not continue to stock the same brands on a consistent basis, and they would often run out of my favorite brands. Overall, I think most of my eating issues stemmed from my personal desire to have fast and convenient food, but next year, I definitely plan on using the dining halls more frequently and asking the chefs to prepare my meals.

Vanderbilt has lots of support for gluten free diets for its students. They include a list of Gluten Free food served at each location and even provide separate toasters and individual peanut butter containers to prevent contamination. A registered dietician and a facebook group also helped me figure out what I could eat. In the dining hall, each item is labeled with allergy information like nuts, gluten, etc.
