After hearing how gluten free friendly the Dobbin House Tavern is, we made a reservation for our Saturday night dinner in Gettysburg. They don't have a gluten free menu, per se, but much of the menu is gluten free anyway, and our friendly server seemed to know what could be modified on the menu, if it wasn't already gluten free. Our son chose the petit filet mignon and lobster tail (quite a treat!), so that was easy. They do also have rack of lamb, duck, pork, strip steaks, chicken, fish, and shellfish on the menu. Again, much of it was gluten free (although I'm sure the crabcakes aren't). Our son had a tough time deciding, but who can argue with Surf and Turf? Dinners come with your choice of a baked potato or sweet potato and a salad (or applesauce for kids). Unfortunately, their homemade assortments of breads and muffins does not include any gluten free items.

Dobbin House is a historic building -- dating to 1776 -- that is furnished in colonial style. They had a few curtain-draped tables that were charming. The Dobbin House also functions as a B&B. It is quite pricey for dinner but suitable for a special occasion -- and worth paying a bit extra for peace of mind regarding gluten free meal preparation. Apparently, they get many GF requests each day. We ate in onef of the formal dining rooms of the restaurant, but there is a more casual "Tavern" in the basement, along with outdoor seating when weather permits. The home was also used to hide slaves and you can visit their very small, free "Underground Railroad" museum on the premises. I'm rating it 4.5 palms, just because I'd like to see a formal Gluten Free Menu with some effort made to prepare sauces gluten free -- and I'd love to see them offer GF bread, too.

Just spent two awesome days in Gettysburg. Had dinner (Thursday night) and lunch (Friday) at the Dobbin House, an 18th century home converted into a restaurant (dinner) and tavern (lunch). Both offered gluten-free alternatives. The waiter at dinner was very knowledgeable of cross-contamination issues (to the extent that when he brought the bread for my husband he put it on the large windowsill we were sitting against so that "any crumbs from the plate would not reach my plate." I ordered their smoked salmon (without the crackers) as an appetizer and was assured by the waiter that the crackers were in a bin in a separate section of the kitchen so there would not be any problems of cross- contamination. The chicken with mushrooms and tomatoes was superb! The waitress at lunch was also very careful with my lunch. She brought me a list of what I could order. I had a green salad with turkey, sliced apples, walnuts, tomatoes with honey mustard dressing and a side of potato salad. It was delicious! On Steinwehr Avenue in the heart of the Gettysburg tourist area is the Dobbin House Tavern. The atmosphere can't be beat. All the food is freshly prepared by a chef who can adjust entrees for gluten-free status. Spring House Tavern is in the cellar, has a real spring, an informal atmosphere. Upstairs has a more formal dining area, a lovely gift shop and a small Underground Railroad Museum. POSTED BY DC CELIACS SUPPORT GROUP http://www.dcceliacs.com
