Hi fellow Celiacs, If you are anything like me your first thought when planning a trip is, "I wonder if I will find safe gluten free food along the way." I have the perfect little place for you to investigate in Niagara- on the Lake, ON, Canada. This little town full of history and beautiful B&B's, hotels and views of Lake Ontario are worth the trip on their own but, "The Irish Tea Room" is so worth penciling into your daily planner. It is about an hour and a half from Toronto or about 30 minutes from Niagara Falls. This is a family owned and operated business with Pat Henry (owner) overseeing all of the shopping, baking, cooking and recipe creations. She is such a worker, wanting everything to be shipshape for the customers that return over and over again. The new people coming in are just as special as the regulars. Each person is treated like a guest in Pat's home. It is just that kind of place. Display cases are filled with wonderful gluten free desserts. There are so many choices and this makes ones decision quite problematic. I love, love, love the raspberry cheesecake!! The white chocolate, cranberry, cornflake creations are sooo good too. My friend and I went for lunch at The Irish Tea Room last week. We both enjoyed the rice based Quiche with 2 side salads. It is always so delicious and the portions are a good size. No visit to The Irish Tea Room would be complete without enjoying one of their amazing gluten free desserts. My friend had a slice of gingerbread and said, "This really hit the spot and it was not too sweet." My cheesecake choice was just perfect. The dollop of real whipped cream on the side was a lovely added touch. It made my tummy giggle. The first time I went to visit this place I grilled Pat about the safety of the gluten free foods. She explained all of the precautions she takes to make sure everything is safe. She has two ovens, one for gluten free the other for non-gluten free baking and meals. She only has 2 non-gluten free foods and they are baked on Mondays only. The rest of the week is dedicated to gluten free foods and every pan; dish and tray are used for gluten free foods only. Her display shelves have dividers between the regular foods and the gluten free foods. No cross contamination for sure. I have never had any challenges from eating at the Irish Tea Room. It is very safe. It is hard to miss all of the different types of teas that are for sale and displayed in every nook and cranny. The pretty colorful tins add to a fun atmosphere in the tearoom. The coffee lovers will not be disappointed with their specialty coffee choices. The cute four-leaf clover design on top of the drinks made with cinnamon makes one see that this family really goes the extra mile. They thought of everything. There are so many choices for lunch and dinner that you should really check out their site at If you are going to the Shaw Festival or coming for one of the many events in the region don't miss this amazing eatery. The experience will give you many happy memories to share with your family and friends. Better still, bring them with you. You will love it. Tell them Lynne sent you. Enjoy
