GF friendly B&B,

When we booked a 3-night stay at Wildflowers Inn in North Conway, NH, we were already excited about the B&B itself, which has the cute frou-frou rooms we like in a New England B&B, an excellent view of Mount Washington from the breakfast room and the deck, a nice billiard table, and a hot tub with a view of the mountains. But as always when we travel, we were worried about food, so we called to see if they could provide my celiac husband with a GF option for the included breakfast. They said they could, but still wary, we packed some GF cereal, etc., as a back up. Let's just say the cereal stayed in its ziplock bag because our hosts went above and beyond to make my husband's breakfast as special as that of any guest. Owned by a couple, Emily and Bob, Emily does the cooking. When we called she didn't know much about the GF diet but said she would do what was needed. Obviously, she did some research before we got there. Before we arrived, she had read up on cross-contamination issues and how gluten affects celiacs and then she cooked accordingly. Breakfast for all guests started with a baked good and naturally GF fresh fruit salad. For my husband, tasty GF blueberry muffins were made from a mix. Emily made sure we knew she had thoroughly cleaned all the utensils and pans and kept them away from other foods. Better still, because there was a whole batch, my husband was given extra muffins to take on our hike (which was a real treat at the summit). For the main breakfast, Emily made my husband eggs in a clean pan, which he ate with GF bread we had brought. He could have eaten the offered sides of bacon and seasoned hash browns instead, but since they are not his favorite foods he stuck with his bread (any celiac who goes would have to check if those items are GF). Most important, Emily seemed very curious about the GF diet and eager to learn more recipes. We already enjoyed our stay and felt comfortable with the food, but I suspect that if more celiacs go and give her more reason to expand her GF knowledge and repertoire that this could become a real find for celiacs. In the end, it's really up to us to encourage and reward the cooks who are willing to learn about GF needs.
