If you’re on a gluten-free diet, it’s a rare occasion that you feel like a chef actually fully embraces your way of life. You feel like you’re an inconvenience and don’t fit in with the master culinary plan of most restaurants. But when you find a restaurant owner who sees the challenge of cooking gluten-free as a way to make his or her family and friends happy, the possibilities become endless and you wind up with a plate full of love sitting right in front of you. For Carla and Christine Pallotta, co-owners of Nebo restaurant in Boston’s North End neighborhood, it took a close family friend getting diagnosed with celiac disease to inspire them to look for alternatives to their decades old Italian recipes crafted by their mother and grandmother. The sisters had long heard about celiac disease, as it’s quite common in Italy, but it wasn’t until it affected someone close to their hearts that they made it their mission to provide the best gluten-free food possible. Nebo is an upscale Italian restaurant and wine bar right in the heart of Boston. Its contemporary chic European atmosphere, coupled with the amazing selection of food make it a perfect spot for a special night out. And, for the gluten-free customer, you won’t feel like the “special” one at the table, rather you’ll fit in just perfectly. Here are some sample selections you’ll find on the specialized gluten-free menu: • Sauted shrimp in a lemon butter sauce over grilled polenta • Golden crisp calamari, Mediterranean aioli • Crisp shrimp, calamari, smelts, Mediterranean aioli • Lightly fried chicken cutlet, aioli, arugula, pacchino tomato • Grilled sweet and hot homemade sausages, cherry peppers • Grilled New Zealand baby lamb skewers, rosemary, evoo • Cream filled mozzarella, prosciutto di parma, balsamic fig glaze • Eggplant and mozzarella timbale in a fresh tomatosauce And, of course, a variety of gluten-free pastas, homemade gnocchi, and pizza with any topping you can think of! Some of the more popular toppings include: hot cherry peppers, mushrooms, olives, onions, pacchino tomatoes, pepperoni, roasted red peppers, sweet corn, artichoke hearts, fontina cheese, fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, gorgonzola, homemade hot sausage, homemade sweet sausage, pancetta, prosciutto cotto, provolone, and ricotta fresca. The meal I had at Nebo was truly amazing, both in taste, warmth and soul. Not only did the food all arrive perfectly on time to my table, but both Carla and Christine took the time to come to my table numerous times to discuss the dishes and how they were prepared. Now, you might be sitting there reading this saying, “um you’re the editor of a food magazine…of course they came to talk to you.” Let me assure you that I was not the only table that the sisters came to that night. All evening they were greeting guests and just in the three hours I was at the restaurant, there were about eight other gluten-free tables that were all greeted personally by the sisters and assured just like I was that their meals would be safe and delicious. I left my meal at Nebo delightfully full and thrilled with how a family-owned business had taken so much time to make sure that every single person can eat the most delicious food on the menu. Up class and Modern Gluten Free Dining in Boston,

Nebo was hard to find and it was very up class and modern, which is just not my thing. The restaurant was slow while we were there and the staff was mostly friendly. The hostess explained that the owners had a friend with severe gluten free allergies and thus they wanted to accommodate people with that need. With a dedicated fryer, pans and utensils, cross contamination was closely watched, and discussed, which is of course a relief. The greatest touch: Gluten Free REAL Beer... that's right. I finally got ot try Estrella Damm Daura Beer! This beer is processed in Europe in a way that leaves the final product with less than 6ppm of gluten, far lower than the required amount to be safe for Celiacs, although it is made from wheat. Dishes were expensive and not that filling. I would not recommend the Sale Con Pepe (Chicken wings) or Salsicce e Rabe. All in all, the items were relatively bland in flavor as well as small and un-filling (especially for the price). The flavors that did exist in the Sale Con Pepe and the Salsicce e Rabe did not blend well, leaving you with rather confused taste buds. In addition, the chicken was under cooked while the pasta was under cooked. The Polenta Con Scampi and Christoforo Pizza saved the day with their great flavor and textures. I would eat both of those every day. One final unfortunate note: Mike and I had moved the table over a bit because I was sitting on the very uncomfortable crack of the bench seat. After we had received our food, and it was still slow, the manager came over at one point and, without asking, moved the table Mike and I were sitting at. She slid it over about a foot back to where it was and said they needed to be even, then promptly walked away. That is NOT how you treat your customer. All in all: Would I go back? Yes, but probably only for the Christoforo and a beer...or to try something new. SUBMITTED BY: Celtic Celiac @

NEBO in Boston's North End has extensive gluten-free menu,

We read about Nebo and when our family (me, my husband and 10 year old daughter) planned a trip to Boston, we made a reservation. The restaurant is located in Boston's North End (Italian Neighborhood). We walked from our hotel, which was next to the Aquarium, across from Quincy Market. The walk was about 15 minutes. The restaurant is new and "trendy" in feel. We were seated by the bar, which was a bit noisy. The back of the restaurant is quieter and I would recommend that. The wait staff is very attentive and knowledgeable about the gluten-free menu and comfortable with gluten-free diners. I found the gluten-free menu extensive. We ordered a lovely salad with a honey-balsamic dressing. My daughter had thirds! For our main courses, we opted for gluten-free pizza (with pepperoni) and 2 GF pasta dishes-one w/ mushrooms, carmalized onions and fontina and another w/ tomatoes and cheese. The pasta dishes were seasoned well. Portions were a bit skimpy and unfortunately, they only offered the standard GF corkscrew pasta. But overall, it was satisfying. The wine list was extensive and we enjoyed our selections. Sorry, I am not a beer drinker, so I don't know if gluten-free beers were offered. We didn't opt for an appetizer, but there were a number of tempting ones to choose from-including eggplant rollatini and a GF fried calamari. There were 4 gluten free desserts offered, including a chocolate cake (not served warm we were told). We split a sweet GF pizza with nutella and nuts. It was really fabulous. I had the leftover slices on the train ride home! I would certainly recommend this restaurant to a GF diner seeking an Italian food experience, which as we know, can be hard to come by.

I did a little research before going to Boston. I found Nebo on the internet. This is an Italian restaurant. They offer their regular menu and a Gluten Free menu. I actually had fried calamari,at a restaurant, for the first time in over 10 years. The owner Carla, was very hospitable. She is very passionate about the food she serves and wants to make sure that everyone can eat there. The Gluten Free menu consists of all your favourites, including stuffed pasta and home made pizzas. A huge and great selection. How can I forget, it includes Gluten Free Desserts!!! I am a very picky eater, I make everything myself. This place did not disappoint. It was so much more than I ever expected. A must for anyone looking for a gluten free splurg. You will not regret it.
