My daughter and her family joined me at one of my favorite area restaurants, Old Angler's Inn, a historic restaurant with outdoor seating which is a great place to dine on a nice day in the spring, summer, or fall. (Indoor seating is also an option in the historic stone restaurant itself, which is used in the winter, for dinner, and also when the inclement weather or larger crowds make it necessary). We ate lunch outside and selected from a menu of appetizers and about 8 different entrees. My daughter ordered a cheese, mushroom, and tomato omelette for my grandson, who is the one following a gluten-free diet due to Celiac Disease. She also showed her special Dining Card to the server and asked him to share it with the chef. The server returned and reported that the chef was happy to make the omelette himself, being careful to use a clean pan and to avoid issues of cross contamination. The omelette looked good, and my grandson seemed to enjoy it. While that was the only item we requested gluten-free, they seemed to be happy to accommodate us. There were also burgers and steaks on the menu, as well as a Caeser salad with grilled shrimp (which my son-in-law ordered) and Cobb Salad (which my daughter odered). My guess is that if those items weren't gluten-free as prepared, the chef would have been happy to tailor them to be gluten-free upon request. There was only one option for "kids" (no "kids" menu)...chicken tenders and fries, which my other grandson ordered. To be honest, they didn't look that special and seemed to be a bit overdone. We probably should have ordered him a juicy burger (which I had...and was very tasty). Generally, like many nice restaurants, this is probably a safe bet if you're following a gluten-free diet, as long as you communicate your needs clearly to the server/manager/chef and choose something from the menu that needs only minimal modifications.
