Resort on the Eastern Shore can accommodate gluten free travelers,

I could write a very lengthy review of our long weekend with our family at this resort, but I'll try to be somewhat brief and just get to the takeaway: this resort is able to accommodate people following gluten-free diets, but it does require a bit of work, and they don't necessarily go out of their way to "wow" the gluten-free guest. The food and dining experience is very nice -- a beautiful dining room called the Waters Edge in the main part of the hotel that is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then there's the Blue Point Provision Company restaurant on the property -- but a moderate walk from the main building -- that serves fresh seafood and steaks. They were only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday during the "off season" while we were there. There's also a casual poolside cafe and food service at the golf course on the property. This is a fairly new resort -- built about 10 years ago, I think. We got an amazing deal for a long weekend during early November, called their "Winter Escape" package. At times we felt like we had the hotel to ourselves, which was nice and peaceful. This is a great resort for families, any time of year: a very nice indoor pool and hot tub, two outdoor pools, a game room, a kids club, an arcade, and plenty of activities planned during the warmer, busier months. We enjoyed the quiet and some real R&R! Getting back to gluten- free, mention it when making your reservation, and meet with the chef the day of your arrival, if possible. That way, you can find out exactly what your options are for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We didn't find out until our third night there that they had gluten-free pancakes, waffles, and muffins available. No one had told us that the first morning at breakfast (and we had made it well-known to the kitchen staff, server, and manager that our son had to follow a gluten-free diet). So that first morning he had the usual standby: eggs, sausage and bacon, and fruit. A bit frustrating when there was an incredible buffet filled with all sorts of delectable baked treats. But we did order the gluten-free pancakes for him the third morning -- and had a couple quick gluten-free muffins ordered "to go" on our last morning before we checked out. Our dinner at the Blue Point Provision Company was fantastic. Our boys both had steaks from the kids menu, which were wonderfully sized strip steaks, served with a delicious Jasmine rice with cranberries, and fresh green beans and yellow tomatoes. We also ordered some shrimp cocktail to start with, which was excellent. The only problem was that there were no gluten-free options for dessert, except maybe ice cream. Fortunately, I'd suspected this would be the case and had brought some homemade gluten-free cupcakes on our trip so our son could have something special and equally as good for dessert on the nights we ordered something ourselves. But that's the type of thing I'm talking'd think they could at least offer one or two gluten-free options: flourless chocolate cake, creme brulee, something....Our dinner at the Water's Edge restaurant was also very good, and we'd found out that they stocked gluten-free pasta (something else I'd brought on the trip "just in case" -- but ended up not needing). We ordered that for our son, topped with crab, shrimp, and calamari in a fish sauce, and it was very good. But again, no dessert options. Our third night we ate in the lounge/bar area which is really cozy with a beautiful view of the water and a couple fireplaces. Our son opted for a burger, but there were no gluten- free buns offered...and the fries weren't fried in a dedicated fryer, so they were off-limits. It was one of those trips that made me a bit sad because I felt my son got a bit short-changed by the lack of options. But I think gluten-free adults will have an easier time and certainly be less heartbroken over things like having to forgo dessert or fries! They do seem to be making an effort and seem to know how to avoid cross contamination in preparation as well, based on some things the kitchen staff said to us. It's still always a good idea, however, to remind them of things like cooking the GF pancakes on a clean part of the griddle where regular pancakes have not been prepared. Again, I think with some communication upon arrival (and perhaps bringing some snacks, favorite treats, and even things like GF hamburger buns or sandwich bread), this resort can be a nice place to vacation if following a gluten-free diet.
