I'd heard that Talara in Baltimore had gluten free offerings, so when I went to what's called the "Harbor East" area of Baltimore recently to meet a friend who was there for a conference, I suggested we give it a try. It calls itself a "Nuevo Latino Bistro" and has some really interesting and unique things on its menu, including a seviche bar and tapas. There is a printed Gluten Free Menu for dinner, which includes Seviche (a variation on sushi but also with cooked options), Tapas, Salads, and Entrees. Unfortunately, no gluten free desserts at this time! But alas, we were there for lunch, and they do not have a printed GF menu...but the server was happy to have the chef mark all the items on the menu that were either naturally gluten free -- or could be tailored to be gluten free. In many cases, it meant leaving out a fried item, like plantain chips or tortilla chips, because they do not have a dedicated fryer for gluten free items (not enough space in the kitchen). I suggested they buy gluten free tortilla chips that don't need frying in-house, so they could offer their "Mini Tostadas" and other items (right now, they're off limits because the chips are fresh and fried in the fryer with other gluten containing items). Darn. Most of their soups are gluten free, including the Ancho Tomato Basil, which my friend had and loved, and the She-Crab Soup. I ordered a delicious Chicken and Endive Salad with delightfully flavorful chicken breast, field greens and Belgian endive, grilled watermelon, goat cheese, candied pistachios, and a delicious mango balsamic vinaigrette. It was a wonderful melding of flavors. My friend ordered the smaller and more basic Talara salad (also GF) with her soup. Unfortunately, a big portion of their lunch menu is sandwiches, but for soup or salad -- or seviche modified to leave out anything fried, I recommend trying this unique restaurant which has a cool vibe...or better yet, do what I plan to do...visit them for dinner so you can try the Shrimp and Grits!
