Our hotel in Venice was just what we were looking for: well located just east of St. Mark's Square (but a bit more hidden on a small canal) and close to cafes and shops. It was beautifully maintained, elegant yet comfortable, and modern in its décor -- especially in the rooms. Unlike many high-end Venetian hotels that tend to be very traditional and ornate in their décor (and appear somewhat dated from the photos we saw online), this hotel incorporates the red and gold colors of Venice but keeps things fresh and modern. The rooms also incorporated many "smart" technology features you don't even find many places in the U.S. Once you enter the room, you put your electronic key in a slot to keep the lights/power on. When you leave and take the key, the power to the room automatically shuts off (note that you therefore cannot charge electronic devices while out of the room!). Also, we found out on our last evening that if the windows are open, the air conditioning will automatically shut off. There were no rooms for four in this hotel (typical for European hotels), so we had to get two rooms for our family. The rooms were slightly different, but both very nice. Breakfast was included each morning, and it was a generous spread: meats, cheeses, tomatoes, mozzarella, fresh croissants of all types, hard boiled eggs, pre-made mini omelettes, spinach tart, hot dogs (seemed to be a Venetian thing!) yogurt, fruit, cereals, rolls, juices, and coffee/tea/cappuccino. As you can see, there was pretty much something for any breakfast preference, all set up at a self-service buffet (except for the hot beverages that were made to order). Our travel agent, Ellen Morse of Gluten Free Travel-Us had found this hotel for us and requested gluten free breakfast alternatives for our son when making our reservation. Between the hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt (labeled gluten free), cheeses, and pre-packaged gluten free muffins they brought out, he had plenty to eat (and a decent variety for our three-days stay). I'd recommend this hotel, but if your preference is to be in a different area of the city or in a different type of hotel, you can always inquire about/request gluten free alternatives if you're lucky enough to have breakfast included as we were. We always like working with Ellen Morse, as she is able to find the best places to stay at the best prices -- and handles the gluten-free (and any other) special requests.
