A wonderful place to stay (and eat) in Umbria, Italy,

This is the agriturismo (like a B&B) where we stayed during our 7-night Food and Wine Tour of Umbria. It is a beautiful restored farmhouse, and it is actually a sustainable farm. The owners have animals, hazelnut trees, and gardens. I believe they even produce their own electricity and heat the water via solar energy. The couple that owns the property, Giancarlo and Fabiola, bought and restored the old farmhouse and property 10 years ago and have turned it into a beautiful and relaxing space that will welcome you. The location is perfect for touring Umbria, as it is centrally located among all the Umbrian towns we visited during the week (Assisi, Spoleto, Montefalco, Trevi, Bevagna, Orvieto, Perugia, and Foligno). It is only about 20 minutes from the train station in Foligno, where you can catch a train to either Rome or Florence. My friend/traveling companion and I had one of the smaller rooms, with two twin beds. I believe all the other rooms are larger, and there is even a suite with a kitchenette available. All rooms have private bathrooms. Breakfast is included each morning, and although the homemade cakes are not gluten free, there are other gluten free options for you like fresh fruit and yogurt, eggs, and tea/coffee. They had the most amazing fresh-squeezed blood orange juice each morning. Now that I'm back at home, oh how I miss that! There is a gluten free store and bakery called The Gluten Escape in nearby Foligno, where we purchased some gluten free cakes and tarts (also reviewed on this website) to supplement the breakfast offerings at the agriturismo. You can also eat dinner at the agriturismo. We dined here twice. One night, our group helped prepare parts of the meal, and the other night, Giancarlo and Fabiola prepared everything for us. The food is delicious, and they made all the necessary gluten free accommodations for things that weren't naturally gluten free (you just need to give them advance notice). Bruschetta was served on gluten free toast, risotto and polenta as side dishes instead of pasta, and the dessert was made with a gluten free crust. We enjoyed many delicious dinner items here like the most amazing chickpea soup, braised pork over polenta, and roasted chicken with sweet local onions and peppers. It is a nice atmosphere sitting at the long table in the family dining room and being served course after course of wonderful food, accompanied by wine. I'd recommend this as a wonderful place to stay when touring Umbria. The tour company we traveled with, Bluone Tours, often has their guests stay here, but you can certainly stay here even if you're not with a tour group. It is not what you'd call a "luxury" property, but it is a comfortable and very clean property...and an authentic way to see Umbria.
