We recently had the pleasure of staying at the historic and beautiful (and recently renovated) Hotel Winneshiek in downtown Decorah, Iowa when in town for a family wedding. A continental breakfast was included with our room, and they had hard-boiled eggs, Yoplait yogurt, and two gluten-free cereals (Rice Krispies and Rice Chex), available upon request (there's a little sign at the breakfast buffet). They also had gluten-free bread available. We requested some, and it seems we were the first. It was an unopened loaf of Ener-G bread, which we've actually never tried before (they were one of the first companies to make GF bread, but it seems there are better tasting ones available now). Our son didn't like it, but between the hard- boiled eggs, yogurt, fruit, and cereal, he had plenty to fill him up. The restaurant, Albert's, is also open for dinner and provides a very nice setting with linen tablecloths and an extensive and sophisticated menu with all gluten-free items clearly marked with a GF. There were plenty of wonderful-sounding options of starters/salads and entrees of any type (steak, fish, etc.) I only wish we'd been able to dine there for dinner, but our other plans didn't leave us with a free night (we were dining at relatives, at the wedding, and at a nearby pizza chain w/ GF pizza). But I look forward to going back! One of the managers of the restaurant mentioned a local college student at Luther College dines there often, as it's the only place where he feels comfortable dining out, due to Celiac Disease. So they are aware of all the proper precautions to prepare GF meals.
