My daughter was diagnosed with Celiac at 20 months old. So when it came time for her to go to college, you can imagine my concerns. She had her heart set on going to Ball State. When we went to orientation and we went to lunch, I asked one of the advisors that was with our group if they had anything gluten free. She said just a moment and went and got the chef on duty that day. She proceeded to fix my daughter a grilled chicken breast on a designated grill so she would have something to eat. Prior to my daughter beginning school I contacted the head of Nutrition & Dietetics. She was wonderful. I was told they cater to kids with celiac. The chefs are the best! We had to purchase a meal plan just like any other freshman. I was expecting to have to pay more because a gluten free diet is/can be more expensive. Not at Ball State, they charge the same for a gluten free meal as they do a regular meal. My daughter was told that when she went to check out, just tell them it's a gluten free meal. We met with one of the chefs prior to her starting school and was reassured that they take very good care of the kids that require a gluten free meal. I, as a parent, was invited to visit the kitchen any time I wanted to talk about any concerns that I may have. I did pop in a couple of times just to make sure she was being treated properly. When we went to eat, she walked back into the kitchen and the chef told her if any of the foods on the serving line that day were safe to eat or if she chose not to eat off the line, he gave her options that he could fix for her on the spot in a designated area. She said the food was delicious! She was so impressed. She had a hot meal every day. They even kept cookies and brownies in the freezer for these kids for whenever they wanted a snack. She never once got sick from eating the food that was prepared for her in the four years she was there. She just graduated this past Saturday. I was so relieved knowing that she had a safe place to go and eat every day. I highly recommend this university to anyone thinking about sending their child here. They do their best to make sure that our children are safe and healthy and receive the best education. I cannot say enough good things about Ball State!
