Sun-Times photographer finds shedding wheat-based foods from diet an eye-opening challenge BY JEAN LACHAT One of my best sources for prepared, healthy food comes from OMG It’s Gluten Free, a new gluten-free cafe on Harlem Avenue in Frankfort. Owner Julie Scianna, who has celiac, opened the cafe in February with her dad, Joel Chestler, and operating partner Eileen Greenawalt. After being misdiagnosed for two and half years with bloating and other digestive problems, Scianna was tested for gluten intolerance on the suggestion of a friend. She gave up gluten and swears that after just two days, she felt entirely back to normal. “I dare anyone to go off gluten for a week and not feel better,” Scianna says. The goal of her cafe is to offer “the things Celiacs can’t get,” including brownies, pizza and lasagna, and to make the food so good that even people who don’t have to eat gluten-free will love it. My young daughters eat up OMG’s lasagna and pizza and then ask, “Mom, was that gluten-free?” The other night, I served the pizza to six kids; they all gobbled it up. I think Scianna has succeeded. My favorites from OMG are the pizza, which I can buy and freeze for a weeknight dinner when we have a softball game, and Hebda’s homemade gluten-free granola, which is absolutely addictive. I have to hide it so my girls don’t get to it before I do. It’s a treat sprinkled over Greek yogurt, with fresh strawberries, bananas or whatever fruit I have on hand. I also buy OMG’s homemade gluten-free bread crumbs for chicken parmigiana, which is great for a fast weeknight supper.

This is a 100 % gluten and peanut free, dine in and carry out cafe, convieniently located near Interstates I-80 and 294. Talented chef, Andrew Hebda, and ready to please owner, Julie Scianna, take requests from customers on what they would like to see on their expanding menu. They offer a variety of muffins, scones, bread, rolls, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, lasagna, pizza, chicken tenders, chicken parm, sanwiches, salads and MORE! They also have dairy free options available. Always tasty, always SAFE!
